Every summer we get the same emergency calls — “My AC just died, can you come today?” — when temperatures hit triple digits. Most of these failures showed warning signs weeks or months earlier. Here are the five most common indicators that your air conditioner is on borrowed time.

1. Warm Air From the Vents

If your thermostat is set to 72°F but the air coming out of registers feels lukewarm, you have one of three issues: low refrigerant (likely a leak somewhere), a failing compressor, or a frozen evaporator coil. None of these fix themselves. Continuing to run a system in this state burns out the compressor — one of the most expensive AC repairs.

2. Weak Airflow

Hold your hand in front of a register. If the air pressure feels weak, check for: a clogged filter, a failing blower motor, or duct leaks. A clogged filter is a 5-minute fix. The other two need a technician.

3. Strange Noises

Your AC should hum quietly. If you hear:

  • Grinding — bearings going out in the blower motor
  • Squealing — belt slipping or motor mount loose
  • Banging or rattling — loose part inside the unit, can cause major damage if ignored
  • Hissing — refrigerant leak (call immediately, refrigerant is harmful)

4. Unusual Smells

A musty smell means mold growth in the evaporator coil or ductwork — usually because condensate isn’t draining properly. A burning smell means electrical components overheating; turn the system off and call us. A sweet, chemical smell often indicates refrigerant leak.

5. High Energy Bills With No Lifestyle Change

If your July electric bill is 25% higher than last July and you haven’t changed thermostat habits, the AC is working harder than it should. This usually points to a refrigerant issue, a dirty condenser coil, or a slowly failing compressor. Catching this early often turns a major compressor replacement into a routine cleaning.

Pre-Season Tune-Up: The Smart Investment That Saves Thousands

A spring tune-up checks refrigerant pressure, cleans the condenser coil, tests the capacitor, inspects the contactor, and verifies airflow. We catch 80% of pending failures during these visits. The cost is a fraction of an emergency callout — and you don’t lose AC during a heat wave.
