Heat Pump Repair in Morrison
Morrison itself is a small town of about 400 people at 6,368 feet, but its 80465 ZIP code reaches up Turkey Creek Canyon and into the foothills. Canyon homes run colder than the Denver weather station suggests, and many rely on propane. Heat pumps in this area work hard, and their repairs reflect that.
Colder than the design numbers
The design heating temperature used for Jefferson County is based on Denver data. Canyon floors and north-facing slopes around Morrison often run colder on still winter nights, as cold air drains downhill and pools. A heat pump sized on paper for 5°F may face colder nights than that.
When a heat pump here can't keep up on the coldest mornings, it's not always broken. We check refrigerant charge, airflow and defrost operation first. If everything tests normally, the unit may simply be at its limit, and the backup heat or a thermostat setting needs to cover those hours.

Morrison Climate Note
Downtown Morrison is about 6,368 feet, and homes up the canyons sit higher. Furnaces need a larger altitude derate than on the plains, and creek-side homes deal with basement moisture.

Propane backup and dual fuel
Many foothill homes heat with propane, and some have added a heat pump to cut propane use. In those dual fuel systems, the changeover point decides how much propane you burn. Propane is typically a pricier fuel than utility gas for the heat it delivers, so shifting more hours onto the heat pump tends to save money. If the thermostat is set to hand off to the furnace at a high temperature, or the outdoor sensor has failed, you lose that benefit. Our dual fuel guide walks through the setting.
For propane furnaces, Jefferson County's mechanical permit covers liquid propane piping as well as natural gas, if any gas work is part of the repair.
Flood areas, stands and snow
Bear Creek runs through town, and homes along the creek corridor carry flood and moisture risk. The Town of Morrison applies a floodplain permit checklist in flood areas. An outdoor unit sitting low in a creek-side yard is vulnerable to high water and to snow. A raised stand or wall bracket keeps the coil above both and gives melt water a place to drain.
On steep lots, units sometimes sit on a deck or a cut into the slope. Check that snow and ice sliding off the roof won't land on the cabinet, which can bend the fan guard and bury the coil.
CORE or Xcel, and what that changes
Electric service around Morrison depends on the address. Xcel Energy serves much of Jefferson County, while CORE Electric Cooperative serves parts of the mountain area. That matters for replacement rebates: CORE's efficiency page showed no heat pump rebate on our November 2026 check, while Xcel offers rebates whose amounts changed in October. Check your bill before planning a replacement.
Rural power is also more prone to outages. Inverter heat pumps sometimes throw an error after a power loss. Cycling the breaker for a few minutes often clears it; a code that returns needs service. On a long outage in deep cold, the house and the refrigerant both get cold. Give the system time to recover after power returns, and don't crank the thermostat way up, which just brings on backup heat at full blast.
Permits and replacement
Within the town boundary, code enforcement is contracted out to Charles Abbott Associates; inspection requests are due by 4 p.m. the prior business day. Outside town limits, Jefferson County Building Safety issues the mechanical permit. Power Ahead Colorado's $1,500 applies in both, for existing homes, and the state credit adds $1,000, with $333 or more on your invoice.

Heat Pump Repair FAQs — Morrison
Why can't my heat pump keep up on the coldest canyon nights?
Canyon sites around Morrison can be colder than design temperatures. If testing shows no fault, backup heat should cover those hours.
Who issues permits for my heat pump replacement?
The Town of Morrison inside town limits, and Jefferson County Building Safety for addresses outside the town.
Should I raise my outdoor unit?
If it sits low near the creek or in a spot where snow piles up, yes. A stand protects the coil and keeps the drain path open.
Do CORE Electric members get a heat pump rebate?
Not as of our November 2026 check of CORE's efficiency page. Power Ahead Colorado and Colorado's $1,000 credit are unaffected by which utility you use.
