Mitsubishi Electric Repair in Denver

Mitsubishi Electric ductless mini-splits and ducted heat pumps have become a common way to heat and cool Denver-area homes, additions and finished basements. They work differently from a furnace and air conditioner, and they fail differently too. This page explains Mitsubishi check codes, the 90-day registration rule behind the 12-year warranty, and how to keep these systems running through a Colorado winter.

What Mitsubishi owners in Colorado call about

Most Mitsubishi calls we take fall into a few groups. Indoor heads that drip water usually have a clogged condensate drain or a failed condensate pump. Systems that blow cool air in heating mode during a cold snap may be in a normal defrost cycle, or may have a sensor, charge or defrost problem. Units that stop and show a code or flash a light need the code read before anyone guesses at parts.

Colorado-specific trouble includes outdoor units buried by drifting snow or sitting on pads too low to shed defrost meltwater, which can freeze into a block under the coil. Hail can damage outdoor coils, and cottonwood can clog them in early summer. Our ductless mini-split repair and heat pump repair technicians check placement and drainage along with the electronics.

Mitsubishi check codes

Mitsubishi systems report faults as check codes, shown on the wired remote or thermostat, or retrieved by a technician from the indoor unit's diagnostic LEDs. The examples below come from the service manual for Mitsubishi's M-Series MVZ multi-position air handlers. Codes vary across Mitsubishi product lines, and codes beginning with F, U and some E codes refer to the outdoor unit, which has its own manual.

P8 deserves a note because it shows up in Colorado winters: it means the indoor coil temperature did not reach the expected heating range within about 20 minutes of the compressor starting. That can come from low refrigerant, a stuck valve or sensor issues, and it should be diagnosed rather than repeatedly reset.

The 90-day registration and the 12-year warranty

Mitsubishi Electric Trane HVAC US, the company that sells Mitsubishi Electric residential systems in the U.S., offers a 12-year parts and compressor warranty on residential systems installed in a single-family home by a Diamond Contractor or Ductless Pro and registered within 90 days of installation. The original equipment owner must live in the home. Systems that do not meet those conditions fall back to the standard limited warranty, whose terms are in Mitsubishi's residential warranty statement.

MrFixer repairs Mitsubishi equipment in or out of warranty. If your system is covered by the 12-year warranty, read the warranty statement or call Mitsubishi to confirm whether covered repairs must be performed by a particular class of contractor before you book, so the claim is not put at risk.

Altitude and cold-weather performance

Heat pumps do not burn fuel, so altitude matters less than for a gas furnace, but Colorado's dry, cold nights do test them. A properly sized cold-climate heat pump will spend more time in defrost on humid cold days and will slow down or stop briefly while it clears ice. That is normal. What is not normal is a coil that stays encased in ice, a unit that runs constantly without reaching setpoint, or a head that blows cold air for long periods.

Mount outdoor units high enough to clear snow, keep the area around them clear, and make sure meltwater can drain away. Our heat pump vs furnace guide explains how heat pumps perform in Front Range winters.

Cleaning, filters and the 'it smells' call

Mini-split indoor heads have washable filters that should be cleaned regularly; when they clog, capacity drops and the coil can freeze in cooling mode. Over time, the blower wheel and coil can collect dust and biological growth, which causes musty smells and drips. A professional cleaning that removes the blower wheel is a different job from rinsing the filters, and it is often the fix for an older head that smells or drips.

Remote and communication problems are another common call. If a head stops responding, replace the remote batteries first, then check whether the unit responds to its manual or emergency operation button. If a multi-zone system has one head that will not run while others do, the cause may be a wiring or communication issue between that head and the outdoor unit rather than a refrigerant problem. Note any check code or flashing light pattern before you cut power, since the code is the quickest way to the cause.

Repair or replace a Mitsubishi system

Board failures, sensors, fan motors, drains and refrigerant leaks are usually repairable. If a compressor fails out of warranty on an older single-zone system, replacement is often worth pricing, especially if newer models fit your home better. We provide written pricing for both. For new systems, see heat pump installation.

Mitsubishi Electric Error Codes

CodeWhat it usually means
P1Room temperature thermistor (TH1) short or open
P2Liquid pipe temperature thermistor (TH2) short or open
P4Drain float switch connector contact failure
P6Pipe temperature out of range in cooling (freeze protection)
P8Pipe temperature not in heating range after compressor start

Codes differ by model and control board. Check the chart on your unit's door panel before acting on any code.

Mitsubishi Electric FAQs

How long do I have to register a Mitsubishi system for the 12-year warranty?

90 days from installation, for systems installed in a single-family home by a Diamond Contractor or Ductless Pro, with the original owner living in the home.

My Mitsubishi mini-split is blowing cold air in heat mode. Is it broken?

Not necessarily. The unit pauses heating to defrost the outdoor coil, which can take several minutes. If it lasts longer or the outdoor coil stays iced, book mini-split repair.

What does P8 mean on a Mitsubishi system?

On M-Series MVZ air handlers it means the pipe temperature did not reach the expected heating range after the compressor started. It needs diagnosis, often for charge, valve or sensor problems.

Who sells Mitsubishi Electric heat pumps in the U.S.?

Mitsubishi Electric Trane HVAC US LLC, which handles residential registration and the 12-year warranty program.

Why is my Mitsubishi indoor unit dripping?

Usually a clogged condensate drain, a failed condensate pump or a dirty coil. Turn it off and call (720) 466-7983.
