Heat Pump Installation in Arvada
Arvada's housing spans a century, from Olde Town bungalows to the newest streets in Candelas and Leyden Rock, so there's no single right heat pump for the city. At about 5,525 feet, with January nights averaging near 19°F, the system has to be chosen and sized for the house it's going into. Here's how we approach heat pump installation in Arvada, and what it costs to run once it's in.
Matching the system to the house
Most Arvada homes are detached houses, and the median one dates to about 1979. In those 1970s and 1980s split-levels and ranches, the most common trigger for a heat pump is a dying air conditioner. If the furnace still has years left, we can replace the AC condenser with a heat pump and add a dual-fuel control, so the heat pump handles mild days and the gas furnace takes the coldest nights.
Candelas and Leyden Rock homes are newer, generally better sealed and usually have ducts sized for modern equipment. They're the best candidates in the city for a ducted cold-climate heat pump that carries nearly the whole winter by itself, with electric strips or the existing furnace as backup.
Closer to Olde Town, older houses may have small ducts, rooms added later, or upstairs spaces the original system never reached. A ductless mini-split (or a mix of ducted and ductless) can work better than forcing a large ducted unit through ductwork that was never built for it. Our guide to mini-splits in older homes covers the layouts.

Arvada Climate Note
Arvada sits at about 5,525 ft, and West Arvada climbs higher toward the foothills — equipment derates more, and winters are colder. Dry winter air is even drier here.

Olde Town Arvada, Candelas, West Woods, Leyden Rock, Sierra Ridge, Whisper Creek, Apex Park, Lake Arbor
Cold-weather performance at 5,500 feet
Thinner air means a heat pump's outdoor coil and indoor fan move less heat per cubic foot than the same unit at sea level. In NREL lab tests in nearby Golden, cold-climate equipment delivered about 5–7% less capacity than sea-level ratings. We size from a room-by-room Manual J using the Jefferson County design temperature of about 5°F, then check the manufacturer's capacity at 5°F, not the 47°F number on the brochure.
Denver-area weather spends few hours below 5°F (about 91 hours a year in NOAA's airport data), so a properly sized cold-climate unit does most of the work. Backup heat covers the rest.
Electrical service and the panel
A ducted heat pump needs a dedicated 240-volt circuit, and an air handler with electric backup strips needs another large one. Many 1970s homes here have 100-amp service that's already busy with a range, dryer and water heater. We check the panel during the estimate. Dual fuel usually avoids the big strip-heat circuit, which is one reason it's popular in older homes. If a panel upgrade is needed, HomeGuide's national range is $1,300–$1,600 for a 100-to-200-amp change, and that work is done by a licensed electrician under its own permit.
Rebates, running costs and the Arvada permit
Arvada is a DRCOG member, so Power Ahead Colorado's $1,500 rebate applies to cold-climate air-source heat pumps in existing homes, as long as the contractor gets pre-approval before work starts. The Colorado heat pump tax credit is $1,000 in 2026, and at least $333 of it must show up as a discount on your invoice. Xcel Energy provides both gas and electricity here, so Xcel's heat pump rebates apply. Installers report Xcel lowered them on October 1, 2026, so confirm current amounts with Xcel. The federal 25C credit ended for equipment placed in service after December 31, 2025.
Be realistic about the bill. At recent Colorado prices, a high-efficiency gas furnace usually heats more cheaply than a heat pump. The heat pump's advantages are that it replaces your AC, cuts gas use and works best with a dual-fuel setup or off-peak rates. We walk through the numbers in heat pump vs. furnace in Colorado.
The city's Building Safety Division requires a residential mechanical permit, and only contractors holding an Arvada mechanical license can apply. Switching from an AC to a heat pump often changes heating capacity by 5% or more, and the city can then ask for a Manual J load calculation. We include one with every replacement. We pull the permit and schedule the final inspection.

Heat Pump Installation FAQs — Arvada
Can a heat pump heat a Candelas or Leyden Rock home on its own?
Usually, yes. Newer, tighter homes in northwest Arvada are good fits for a cold-climate ducted system sized to the Jefferson County 5°F design temperature, with backup heat for the rare subzero night.
My furnace is ten years old but my AC died. What's the smart move?
Replace the AC with a heat pump and keep the furnace as backup. That's dual fuel. You get efficient heat in mild weather and gas heat on the coldest nights, without buying a new furnace.
Which rebates apply in Arvada?
In 2026: the Colorado heat pump tax credit (at least $333 to you), Power Ahead Colorado's $1,500, and Xcel Energy's heat pump rebate. Confirm Xcel's amounts, which changed October 1, 2026. The federal 25C credit no longer applies.
Does Arvada require a permit for a heat pump?
Yes. A residential mechanical permit from Building Safety, pulled by a contractor with an Arvada mechanical license, plus a final inspection. A new circuit or panel needs electrical permitting too.
