Air Conditioner Repair in Arvada
July highs in Arvada average close to 90°F, and most homes here are detached houses with central air sitting outside in full sun. Whether you're in an older neighborhood near Ralston Road or a new build on the northwest edge, a few predictable failures cause most of the AC calls we see.
Older systems in established neighborhoods
With a median home built around 1979, many central air systems in Arvada are on their second condenser, and some still run R-22, a refrigerant that's no longer produced. When those older systems develop a leak, the repair often costs more than it's worth. Electrical failures are more common and much cheaper to fix: weak run capacitors, pitted contactors and condenser fan motors that overheat on the hottest afternoons.
Many homes from the 1950s through the 1970s got central air after they were built, on ducts sized for heating. When AC runs constantly but the house stays warm, the ductwork is often the limit, not the condenser.

Arvada Climate Note
Arvada sits at about 5,525 ft, and West Arvada climbs higher toward the foothills — equipment derates more, and winters are colder. Dry winter air is even drier here.
Neighborhoods We Serve
Olde Town Arvada, Candelas, West Woods, Leyden Rock, Sierra Ridge, Whisper Creek, Apex Park, Lake Arbor
Newer homes on the northwest side
Candelas and Leyden Rock homes tend to have newer two-stage or variable-speed equipment with communicating controls. These systems are efficient but more complex, and a single failed sensor or wiring fault between the thermostat, furnace and condenser can shut cooling down entirely. We check controls and communication before swapping major parts.
Builder installs in fast-growing subdivisions can also come with small defects that surface a few summers in: refrigerant charge set incorrectly, condensate lines without enough slope, or condensers set too close to a wall or fence. These are inexpensive to correct once they're found.
Thin air and sizing at 5,500 feet
At roughly 5,525 feet, air is less dense than at sea level, so the same airflow carries less heat. Industry guidance from ACCA applies an altitude correction of around 0.92 to cooling capacity at 5,000 feet for a dry coil. A system that was sized from sea-level tables, or that's running with a dirty coil or low airflow, has little margin left on a 90-degree afternoon. That's why we look at airflow and coil condition, not just refrigerant, when a unit can't keep up.
What we check on every AC call
Thermostat, filter, breaker and outdoor disconnect first. Then capacitor and contactor tests, fan and compressor amp draw, refrigerant pressures with superheat or subcooling, evaporator coil condition, condensate drain and float switch, and the supply-to-return temperature split. You'll get a flat-rate price before any work starts, the diagnostic is free with the repair, and there's no overtime charge for evenings or weekends. Our trucks carry common parts for Trane, Lennox, Carrier, Goodman, Bryant, Rheem and other major brands.
Repair, replace, or switch to a heat pump
A capacitor, contactor or fan motor is a repair at almost any age. A failed compressor or a significant leak on a 15- to 20-year-old system is usually where replacement starts to make sense.
Replacing an air conditioner requires a residential mechanical permit from the City of Arvada Building Safety Division. If the new unit's capacity is 5% or more above or below the old one, expect the city to ask for a Manual J load calculation. If electrical work goes beyond disconnecting and reconnecting, it needs to be on the permit, or the inspection fails. Because Xcel Energy is the electric utility, compare a heat pump with a straight AC; heat pumps have qualified for Xcel and regional rebates that standard AC units don't.

Air Conditioner Repair FAQs — Arvada
My Arvada AC still uses R-22. Should I repair the leak?
Usually not on an older system. R-22 is no longer manufactured, so recharging is expensive, and the leak tends to come back. Electrical repairs on R-22 units are still reasonable.
Why does my new Candelas home's AC show an error code on the thermostat?
Communicating systems report faults through the thermostat. Common causes are a tripped condensate float switch, a sensor fault or a wiring issue. We read the code history and test the component it points to.
Will Arvada inspect my AC replacement?
Yes. A residential mechanical permit is required, followed by a final mechanical inspection, plus a final electrical inspection if electrical work goes beyond disconnect and reconnect.
The AC runs all afternoon and the house is still warm. What should I check?
Replace the filter, make sure vents and returns are open, and hose off the outdoor coil if it's dirty. If it still can't keep up, we'll measure airflow and refrigerant charge to find out whether it's the equipment or the ductwork.
