Air Conditioner Repair in Commerce City
Nearly 70 percent of Commerce City's homes were built in 2000 or later, and most came with central air from the builder. The oldest of those systems are now reaching the age when compressors, coils and fan motors start to fail, often in the first real heat wave of summer.
Builder-grade AC in the northern neighborhoods
Reunion began in 2001, and neighborhoods like Belle Creek, River Run and Buffalo Run followed. Many of their homes were built with entry-level single-stage condensers sized from standard plans. The early ones are now 15 to 25 years old. The most common repairs we see on them are failed run capacitors, burned contactors, worn condenser fan motors and leaking indoor coils.
These neighborhoods are on open land with young landscaping and little shade, so condensers sit in direct sun most of the day. Heat inside the electrical compartment shortens capacitor life, and wind carries dust and seed fluff into the coil. Homes that border open grassland see this most. A dirty coil raises head pressure, the compressor draws more current, and the weakest electrical part fails first.

Commerce City Climate Note
Open plains exposure means strong wind loads and rapid temperature swings. Many older Commerce City homes have leaky ductwork running through unconditioned crawl spaces — sealing and insulation deliver some of the biggest comfort wins here.

Older homes in the original town
In Adams City and Adams Heights, the mid-century single-story homes were commonly built without central air. Systems added later often have small ducts, a single return and long refrigerant line sets. Those setups are prone to coil freezing when the filter is dirty and to warm air when the line set or coil leaks.
Line sets in these homes were often run along exterior walls or through crawl spaces when the AC was added. Kinked or poorly insulated lines raise suction temperatures and cut capacity, so we inspect the full run, not just the outdoor unit.
Air quality and your AC filter
Commerce City is home to the Suncor refinery, the largest in the Rocky Mountain region, and many homeowners here want better indoor filtration. Upgrading to a higher-efficiency filter can help, but a filter that is too restrictive for your ductwork will cut airflow, reduce cooling and can freeze the coil. We check static pressure before recommending a filter upgrade.
How we diagnose and fix a warm-air AC
We confirm the symptom and check the thermostat and filter, then test the capacitor, contactor, fan motor and compressor electrically. We measure refrigerant pressures and calculate superheat or subcooling instead of adding refrigerant by feel. If there is a leak, we tell you where it is and what fixing it involves.
Hail is common on the Front Range, and a bad storm can bend condenser fins enough to cut airflow. We check the coil on every visit. The diagnostic is free with the repair, every job is quoted at a flat price before we start, and there is no overtime charge.
Replacement, permits and utilities
Repair makes sense for most electrical and fan failures. A failed compressor or a leaking coil on a system past about 15 years usually points to replacement, and R-22 systems are costly to recharge because that refrigerant is no longer made. A heat pump is worth considering if you replace, since one outdoor unit can cool in summer and carry much of the heating load in winter, with your gas furnace as backup on the coldest nights. Before quoting any replacement, we check whether the existing ducts and electrical service can support it.
Commerce City's Building Safety Division issues building permits; call to confirm the requirements for your AC replacement. Electric service is from United Power or Xcel Energy depending on your address, and efficiency rebates are tied to your provider.

Air Conditioner Repair FAQs — Commerce City
My Reunion-area AC is about 20 years old. Should I replace it now?
Not if it cools well and tests healthy. We can check compressor condition, refrigerant charge and coil condition so you can plan ahead rather than replace during a heat wave.
Can I use a MERV 13 filter in my AC system?
Sometimes. It depends on your blower and duct size. We measure static pressure to tell you whether a higher-efficiency filter will restrict airflow.
Does United Power or Xcel serve my Commerce City home?
It depends on your address. Your electric bill shows the provider, and rebates differ between the two.
My older Adams City home's AC freezes up. Why?
Homes that had central air added later often have one small return. A dirty filter or a restricted return starves the coil of air and it ices over. We check airflow before adding any refrigerant.
