Air Conditioner Repair in Evergreen
Evergreen summers are milder than Denver's, but sunny afternoons in a west-facing great room or a loft can still overheat a mountain home. Cooling at 7,000-plus feet comes with its own rules, from reduced capacity to smoke-season filtration. When your AC or mini-split isn't keeping up, we find out why.
Less air, less capacity
At about 7,162 feet, the air is thin enough to noticeably reduce what an air conditioner can move. ACCA guidance uses a capacity correction of about 0.92 at 5,000 feet for a dry coil, and the loss keeps growing with elevation. Equipment chosen from sea-level ratings may fall short on the hottest days, and it has almost no margin for a dirty coil, clogged filter or low refrigerant.

Cooling homes that weren't built for it
Many Evergreen homes, from cabins to older custom houses, were designed for heat first, and some rely on boilers or radiant floors with no ductwork at all. Where central air was added, the ducts are often sized for heating and run through cold crawlspaces or tight chases. Ductless mini-splits are a common choice in these homes, and cold-climate models can also provide heat. They need regular filter cleaning, clear drain lines and occasional coil cleaning to keep working.
Lofts, great rooms with tall windows and upper floors get the most sun. If those rooms run hot while the rest of the house is fine, airflow or a missing return is usually the problem rather than the size of the condenser.
Smoke, wildlife and outdoor units
Wildfire mitigation is part of owning a home here, and smoke events mean running the blower with the windows closed. A good filter loads up quickly during smoke season, so check it every couple of weeks. Outdoor units on wooded lots collect pine needles and debris in the coil and around the fan; keep a couple of feet clear and remove needles before the season starts. Summer hail is the other hazard; the Front Range is known as Hail Alley, and flattened fins on a condenser cut airflow just like a clogged coil.
Older condensers from the 1990s and 2000s may use R-22. EPA does not require you to replace them, but new R-22 is no longer produced or imported, so recharging a leak is expensive.
How we repair it
For central systems, we test the thermostat, breaker and disconnect, the capacitor, contactor, fan motor and compressor, then read refrigerant pressures with superheat or subcooling and inspect the indoor coil and drain. For mini-splits, we check the indoor heads, filters, drain lines, communication wiring and line-set connections. You get a flat-rate price before work starts, the diagnostic is free with the repair, and nights and weekends cost no more.
Repair, replace or go with a heat pump
Electrical parts and fan motors are worth replacing on nearly any working unit. A failed compressor or leaking R-22 coil usually is not. In Evergreen, an AC replacement requires a Jefferson County mechanical permit plus an electrical permit, and we handle both. Because many homes here burn propane for heat, a cold-climate heat pump that also handles cooling can be worth pricing against a straight AC. Regional and utility programs have offered heat pump rebates, and eligibility depends on whether Xcel Energy or CORE Electric Cooperative serves your address.

Air Conditioner Repair FAQs — Evergreen
Do I really need AC in Evergreen?
Many homes get by without it, but sunny lofts and west-facing rooms can overheat, and closed windows during smoke season make cooling more valuable. A mini-split for the hottest area is often enough.
Our mini-split stopped cooling and shows an error code. Can you fix it?
Yes. Error codes often point to sensors, communication wiring, a drain problem or low refrigerant. We read the code and test from there.
How often should we change the filter during wildfire smoke?
Check it every week or two during smoke events. A loaded filter cuts airflow and can freeze the AC coil.
Should we cover our condenser for the winter?
Don't wrap it in plastic, which traps moisture and invites rodents. A breathable top cover that keeps snow and needles out of the top is fine for an AC-only unit. Never cover a heat pump, since it runs all winter.
Who issues AC permits in Evergreen?
Jefferson County Building Safety, since Evergreen is unincorporated. AC replacements need a mechanical permit and an electrical permit.
