AC Installation & Replacement in Evergreen
At about 7,100 feet, Evergreen used to get by without air conditioning, and many homes still have none. Hotter summers have changed that, especially in houses with big view windows, but the right cooling system here looks different from a typical suburban install. We size for altitude, work with Jefferson County permits and give you a written quote.
Most homes are adding cooling for the first time
A large share of the work here is first-time cooling. Homes with forced-air furnaces can usually take a coil and condenser, though ducts designed for heat often need a better return path. Homes heated by a boiler, hot-water baseboard or radiant floors have no ducts at all, and that is common in the area. For those, ductless mini-splits are usually the most practical answer: a few wall or ceiling heads, one or two outdoor units, and no duct chases through log or timber walls.
Many Evergreen families only need cooling in a few rooms, such as a loft or a bedroom under the roof. Targeting those spaces costs less than conditioning the entire house. Our ductless guide explains the layout options.

Evergreen Climate Note
At about 7,162 feet, Evergreen averages about 81 inches of snow, with a January mean low near 12.5°F and a record low of -38°F. Furnaces need roughly a 29 percent altitude derate.

Altitude changes the math
Thin air cuts the capacity of both the coil and the condenser fan. The commonly used industry factor, reported by ACHR News, is roughly 0.92 at 5,000 feet; Evergreen is more than 2,000 feet above that, so expect a steeper loss. That does not mean doubling the size. Nights here are cool, and a house that is closed up during the day and flushed at night may need far less cooling than its square footage suggests. A Manual J load calculation is the only reliable way to size it, and it matters for heat pumps even more, since the same equipment has to carry winter loads.
Propane, CORE or Xcel, and why a heat pump often wins
Outlying properties often heat with propane. For electricity, most addresses are listed with Xcel Energy, while CORE Electric Cooperative's territory covers some of the mountain parts of the county; whichever name is on your bill decides which utility programs you can use. If you are paying for propane, a cold-climate heat pump that cools in summer and heats through most of the winter can cut fuel use considerably, with the existing boiler or furnace as backup.
Incentives favor that route. For 2026, Colorado's credit for an air-source heat pump is $1,000, of which the registered contractor must pass at least $333 to you, and Power Ahead Colorado adds $1,500 for qualifying cold-climate models when we apply before the install. Nothing comparable exists for cooling-only equipment, and the federal 25C credit ended with 2025. See our cold-weather heat pump guide for performance details.
Placement: snow, slopes and wildfire mitigation
Mountain lots bring their own placement problems. An outdoor unit needs to sit above expected snow depth, away from roof drip lines where snow and ice slide off, and on a solid level base on a slope. Heat pumps also need a clear drain path for defrost water. Because most Evergreen owners already maintain defensible space against wildfire, we set the pad in a cleared zone and keep it away from brush and wood decking. In Hiwan and other areas with covenants, check any rules on visible equipment before we finalize the location.
Permits, panels and equipment rules
Unincorporated Evergreen falls under Jefferson County Building Safety, and cooling work there takes a mechanical permit plus an electrical one; both applications and the inspection visits are part of our job. Older cabins and homes on long rural service runs may have limited panel capacity, so we check the equipment's minimum circuit ampacity first. New split systems must meet at least 13.4 SEER2 for AC or 14.3 SEER2 for a heat pump, and use R-454B or R-32 refrigerant.

Air Conditioning Installation FAQs — Evergreen
Does an Evergreen home really need air conditioning?
Not always. Many homes need cooling only in upstairs rooms or spaces with large west windows. A ductless head or two may be enough.
My house has radiant floor heat. Can I add AC?
Yes, but not through ducts you don't have. Ductless mini-splits are the most common solution, and they can also heat.
Is my Evergreen home on Xcel or CORE?
Most of the area is Xcel, but CORE Electric serves part of mountain Jefferson County. Your bill tells you which, and incentives differ.
Will a heat pump work at 7,000 feet in winter?
Cold-climate models are designed for it, especially with the existing boiler or furnace as backup on the coldest nights.
