Air Conditioner Repair in Wheat Ridge

Wheat Ridge has hit 105°F, and most of its homes were built before central air was a given. When the AC can't keep up here, the cause is as likely to be a 1960s duct system or a hail-battered coil as a worn-out compressor.

Central air added to houses that weren't built for it

With a median build year around 1964, much of the city's housing went up when cooling meant an open window, an attic fan or an evaporative cooler. Central AC was usually added later, sharing ducts sized for a furnace. Air conditioning needs noticeably more airflow than heating, so these systems often have low airflow, which shows up as rooms that never cool, an indoor coil that freezes, and a compressor that runs for hours.

The city's permit list still includes swamp coolers alongside air conditioners, and we regularly see homes switching from one to the other. When a swamp cooler is removed and central AC is added, the old roof or window opening, the supply ducts and the return path all need attention, or the new system will struggle.

Wheat Ridge Climate Note

Wheat Ridge at 5,348 ft has a moderate microclimate. Older homes often have undersized returns and oversized supplies — we balance airflow during install or upgrade.

Storm damage and outdoor units

The May 8, 2017 hailstorm, one of the most expensive in Colorado history, dropped its largest hail on the west metro, including Wheat Ridge, Lakewood and Golden. Hail flattens condenser coil fins and can puncture coil tubes or crack fan blades. A coil that's been hit moves less air, runs at higher pressure and is more likely to trip a breaker or fail a capacitor on a hot day.

Older lots with mature trees add their own debris: leaves, seed pods and cottonwood fluff that mat on the coil each spring. A coil cleaning is sometimes the whole repair.

Our diagnostic routine

We check the thermostat, filter, breaker and disconnect, then test the capacitor and contactor, fan motor and compressor amp draw. We read refrigerant pressures with superheat or subcooling, inspect the evaporator coil and drain, and measure the temperature split and static pressure so we can tell you whether the issue is the equipment or the ducts. Every price is flat-rate and quoted before we start. The diagnostic is free with the repair, and evening and weekend calls carry no overtime.

Repair, replace, or rethink the ductwork

Electrical parts like capacitors, contactors and fan motors are worth replacing on nearly any working system. A failed compressor, a leaking R-22 system (that refrigerant is no longer made), or a unit past about 15 to 20 years usually isn't. In many homes here, the smartest money goes into an added return or resized ducts at the same time as new equipment.

The City of Wheat Ridge Building Division requires a permit for air conditioner and swamp cooler replacement, submitted through its OpenGov portal and inspected afterward. If you're replacing, ask us about heat pumps; with Xcel Energy as the utility, qualifying heat pumps have been eligible for rebates that standard AC isn't.

Air Conditioner Repair FAQs — Wheat Ridge

Can I replace my swamp cooler with central air?

Yes, if the house has forced-air ductwork or room to add it. The old cooler opening needs to be sealed and the ducts checked for size. Both the removal and the new AC fall under the city's permit requirements.

My AC was added to a 1960s ranch and the back rooms stay hot. Can that be fixed?

Usually. Common fixes include adding a return, sealing leaky ducts, adjusting blower speed or balancing dampers. We measure first so we're not guessing.

Do I need a permit to replace my AC in Wheat Ridge?

Yes. The Building Division requires permits for air conditioners and swamp coolers. Applications have gone through the OpenGov portal since January 2025. Repairs don't require a permit.

Why is my indoor coil freezing up?

Low airflow from a dirty filter or undersized ducts, or low refrigerant from a leak. Turn the system off to let it thaw, then call us so we can find which one it is.

Does the elevation in Wheat Ridge affect how well my AC cools?

Somewhat. At about 5,300 feet the air is thinner and carries less heat per cubic foot, so cooling capacity runs a bit below sea-level ratings. Systems in older homes with restricted ducts feel that most. Good airflow and a clean coil matter more here than at sea level.
