Heat Pump Repair in Wheat Ridge
Wheat Ridge filled in with houses in the 1950s, before the city incorporated in 1969, and today the median home dates to about 1964. Heat pumps in those homes are almost always recent conversions. The equipment is new, but the ductwork and electrical service around it often aren't, and that drives a lot of our repairs.
New heat pump, old ducts
A heat pump moves more air than the furnace it replaced, and it heats with air that's warm rather than hot. Ductwork sized for a 1950s furnace often can't carry that airflow. The symptoms look like equipment problems: a unit that trips on high pressure, rooms that never warm up, noisy registers, or a frozen indoor coil in summer.
We check static pressure and airflow before we replace parts. If the ducts are the limit, the fix might be a larger return, opening a closed register or replacing a crushed run. Swapping a compressor won't solve an airflow problem. Filters matter more than people expect here too: a high-MERV filter that was fine with the old furnace can choke a heat pump on older ducts. We'll suggest a filter that balances cleaning and airflow for your system.

Wheat Ridge Climate Note
Wheat Ridge at 5,348 ft has a moderate microclimate. Older homes often have undersized returns and oversized supplies — we balance airflow during install or upgrade.

Ice, defrost and the outdoor coil
Light frost and short defrost cycles are normal. Thick ice that builds over hours isn't. When a heat pump's coil ices up completely, we look at the defrost sensor and board, the outdoor fan motor and capacitor, and the refrigerant charge. We also look at the site, since placement causes more icing than people realize. A unit beside a downspout or beneath a roof edge with no gutter will ice up no matter how well it's working.
The May 2017 hailstorm hit Wheat Ridge hard, and some outdoor units still carry flattened fins from that storm or later ones. Damaged fins make winter frosting worse and are worth straightening.
Townhomes, Fruitdale and ductless heads
Fruitdale and other parts of the city have a large share of townhomes and attached homes, where ductless heat pumps are a common way to heat and cool without running ducts. Ductless repairs we see often include heads that drip, units that throw error codes after a power blip, and weak airflow from a blower wheel coated with dust. In attached homes, line sets often run along shared walls or across roofs, which can make leaks harder to reach; we pressure test sections to narrow down the spot. Our guide to ductless in older homes shows how these systems are routed.
Electrical service and backup heat
Older houses here may have limited electrical capacity. Electric backup strips add significant load, and if they kick on at the same time as an oven or dryer, breakers can trip. A heat pump that has stopped working shifts all the heating to those strips. We check that the outdoor unit runs, measure strip current, and set an outdoor lockout so the backup only helps when it should. If you have a gas furnace for backup, the thermostat should be set for dual fuel instead.
Replacing a heat pump in Wheat Ridge
When a recently converted system fails, check warranty first; many manufacturers require registration soon after installation for full parts coverage. When an older unit has a failed compressor or valve, replacement can make more sense. The Wheat Ridge Building Division has issued permits through its OpenGov portal since January 2025, and we handle the application and inspection.
Cold-climate replacements can earn Power Ahead Colorado's $1,500 and the state credit, at least $333 of it on your invoice. Federal 25C ended after 2025.

Heat Pump Repair FAQs — Wheat Ridge
Why does my new heat pump trip off in cold weather?
In older Wheat Ridge homes, restricted ductwork is a common cause. High pressure in heating mode trips the unit's safety.
My ductless head shows a blinking light. What does that mean?
It's an error code. Note the pattern and the model, and we can usually tell whether it's an indoor, outdoor or wiring fault.
Should I switch to emergency heat if my heat pump stops?
Yes, as a temporary measure, then call for repair. Running on emergency heat for long periods is expensive.
Who issues heat pump permits in Wheat Ridge?
The city's Building Division, through its OpenGov online portal.
