Trane vs. Lennox
Trane and Lennox both sit at the premium end of the market and both have refreshed their lineups for the new refrigerants. Their warranties are built differently, and that is where most homeowners should focus.
The short answer
Both give 60 days to register. Lennox’s Signature tier has a longer parts term (12 years) and a labor option; Trane covers 10 years of parts without labor but lets a registered warranty transfer to a buyer for $99. Both moved new ducted systems to R-454B. Pick the tier and the installer first, then the brand.
Trane vs. Lennox: side by side
| Trane | Lennox | |

| Registration window | 60 days | 60 days |
| Registered coverage | 10-year parts | 10-year parts on Merit and Elite; 12 years on Signature (or a 3-year labor option) |
| Labor coverage | Not included (extended plans sold separately) | Optional 3 years instead of the parts extension |
| If not registered | 5-year parts | Base parts warranty only |
| Notable extra | Registered warranty transferable within 90 days of a home sale for a $99 fee | Signature Collection gets the longest registered parts term of the brands compared here (12 years) |
| New-system refrigerant | R-454B | R-454B ducted; R-32 ductless |
| Altitude setup (example manual) | Follow the manual’s high-altitude section (orifices, gas pressure) | SL280V furnace: no modification to 4,500 ft; high-altitude kits above that (all of metro Denver) |
| Selling the house | $99 within 90 days of sale | Check Lennox’s terms for your registration |
Registration and coverage
Both brands use a 60-day registration window. Trane’s registered limited warranty is typically 10 years of parts, with labor available only through an extended plan; late or missing registration falls back to the base warranty, usually 5 years of parts.
Lennox gives Merit and Elite equipment 10 years of parts when registered, with a labor alternative, and the Dave Lennox Signature Collection 12 years. If labor coverage matters to you, Lennox’s option is worth a look; if you expect to sell, Trane’s $99 transfer is the feature to weigh.
Tiers
Trane: Premier, Priority and Choice. Lennox: Dave Lennox Signature Collection, Elite and Merit. The top tiers of both brands offer variable-capacity outdoor units and variable-speed indoor blowers; the value tiers are simpler single-stage equipment that can be a smart buy in a well-sealed, modest-size home.
Refrigerant and repairs
Both use R-454B in new ducted systems; Lennox uses R-32 in ductless. Older R-410A systems from both brands remain serviceable. If your outdoor unit fails on an older system, ask whether the quote includes a matched indoor coil.
Altitude
The Lennox SL280V needs high-altitude changes above 4,500 feet. Trane furnaces are converted according to the manual’s high-altitude section. Either brand can perform well at 5,000–7,000 feet when the conversion is done, which is why we measure gas pressure and temperature rise on every startup and repair.
What matters more than the logo in Colorado
- Altitude conversion. Every brand’s furnace needs its manual’s high-altitude setup at metro elevations. Ask for the gas-pressure, combustion and temperature-rise numbers at startup. Our altitude calculator shows what it means for heat output.
- A load calculation. A Manual J sized system beats a bigger box from a better brand. See heat pump sizing at altitude.
- Ducts. Leaky or undersized ducts cancel out premium equipment. If one room never keeps up, read why one room is colder.
- Registration. All of these brands cut coverage roughly in half if the equipment isn’t registered on time. Get the confirmation in writing.

Questions
Which is quieter, Trane or Lennox?
Both offer quiet variable-speed equipment in their top tiers. Sound depends on the specific model, the pad location and the duct system; compare the published sound ratings of the models you are quoted.
Does Trane include labor in its warranty?
No. Trane’s registered warranty covers parts; labor is available through optional extended warranties.
How long do I have to register a Lennox or Trane system?
Sixty days from installation for both. Make sure your installer registers it or do it yourself.
Do both brands work for heat pumps in Colorado?
Both make variable-speed heat pumps. For Denver winters, compare cold-climate performance data for the exact models and size the system with a proper load calculation.
