Lennox vs. Carrier
Lennox and Carrier both sell premium, communicating systems at the top of their lineups and simpler equipment at the bottom. For a Front Range homeowner, the comparison comes down to warranty mechanics, refrigerant choices and how each furnace is converted for altitude.
The short answer
Lennox’s top Signature Collection carries the longest registered parts term here (12 years), and its SL280V furnace needs altitude kits above 4,500 ft, which covers all of metro Denver. Carrier gives a longer 90-day registration window and a labor option. Both build premium variable-speed equipment; pick on the specific model, the warranty you’ll actually register and the installer.
Lennox vs. Carrier: side by side
| Lennox | Carrier | |
|---|---|---|
| Parent company | Lennox International | Carrier Global |
| Sister brands | Allied Air brands (Armstrong Air, Ducane, AirEase, Concord) | Bryant, Payne |
| Product tiers | Dave Lennox Signature (top), Elite (mid), Merit (value) | Infinity (top), Performance (mid), Comfort (value) |
| Registration window | 60 days | 90 days |
| Registered coverage | 10-year parts on Merit and Elite; 12 years on Signature (or a 3-year labor option) | 10-year parts, or 5-year parts + 3-year labor (your choice) |
| Labor coverage | Optional 3 years instead of the parts extension | Optional 3 years if you pick the labor plan |
| If not registered | Base parts warranty only | 5-year parts |
| Notable extra | Signature Collection gets the longest registered parts term of the brands compared here (12 years) | Infinity furnaces up to 98.5% AFUE with modulating gas valves on select models |
| New-system refrigerant | R-454B ducted; R-32 ductless | R-454B (“Puron Advance”) |
| Altitude setup (example manual) | SL280V furnace: no modification to 4,500 ft; high-altitude kits above that (all of metro Denver) | 58MXA furnace: no derate to 2,000 ft, then 2% per 1,000 ft (U.S.) |

Warranty terms side by side
Lennox requires registration within 60 calendar days. For Merit and Elite equipment it adds 5 years of parts (10 total) or, instead, 3 years of labor plus 2 more years of parts. Dave Lennox Signature Collection equipment gets a 2-year parts extension, 12 years in total, or the labor option. Colorado is not one of the states where coverage applies without registration.
Carrier’s 90-day window is the longest of the brands we compare. Registered Carrier equipment gets 10 years of parts or 5 years of parts plus 3 years of labor; unregistered equipment gets 5 years of parts.
Signature vs. Infinity
Both top lines pair variable-speed blowers with staged or modulating heat and communicating thermostats. Lennox’s middle and value tiers are Elite and Merit; Carrier’s are Performance and Comfort. When comparing quotes, line up the tiers rather than the brands, and compare the exact model numbers, AFUE or SEER2 ratings and the thermostat that comes with them.
Refrigerants
Lennox says its new ducted systems use R-454B and its ductless products use R-32. Carrier’s new ducted systems use R-454B, branded Puron Advance. Lennox also notes that existing R-410A systems can still be repaired and recharged for the foreseeable future.
Altitude: a real difference on paper
Lennox’s SL280V instructions allow installation up to 4,500 feet without modification; above that the manifold pressure, orifices and sometimes the pressure switch change, using Lennox’s high-altitude kits. Since Denver sits at about 5,280 feet and Castle Rock above 6,000, nearly every Lennox furnace in the metro needs that conversion. Carrier’s 58MXA approves a 2% derate per 1,000 feet above 2,000 feet. Confirm the conversion was done and documented.
What matters more than the logo in Colorado
- Altitude conversion. Every brand’s furnace needs its manual’s high-altitude setup at metro elevations. Ask for the gas-pressure, combustion and temperature-rise numbers at startup. Our altitude calculator shows what it means for heat output.
- A load calculation. A Manual J sized system beats a bigger box from a better brand. See heat pump sizing at altitude.
- Ducts. Leaky or undersized ducts cancel out premium equipment. If one room never keeps up, read why one room is colder.
- Registration. All of these brands cut coverage roughly in half if the equipment isn’t registered on time. Get the confirmation in writing.

Questions
Is Lennox better than Carrier?
Neither is universally better. Lennox’s Signature Collection has the longest registered parts warranty of the two; Carrier has the longest registration window and a labor option. The installation and the specific model matter more.
Do Lennox furnaces need a high-altitude kit in Denver?
For the SL280V series, Lennox allows installation up to 4,500 feet without modification, so furnaces in the Denver metro need the high-altitude changes listed in the manual.
What refrigerant do new Lennox and Carrier systems use?
Both use R-454B in new ducted systems. Lennox’s ductless products use R-32.
Can MrFixer repair Lennox and Carrier?
Yes, we service both brands, including Lennox’s Allied Air sister brands and Carrier’s Bryant and Payne.
