Rheem vs. Goodman
Rheem and Goodman are both common on Front Range quotes, especially in townhomes, rentals and budget-conscious replacements. They are built by different companies, use different new refrigerants and word their warranties differently.
The short answer
Both are mainstream, widely installed brands. Rheem gives a longer 90-day registration window (on current certificates) and uses R-454B; Goodman gives 60 days, uses R-32 and adds a lifetime heat exchanger on registered furnaces plus a lifetime compressor on select ACs. Neither covers labor, and the long terms mostly stay with the original registered owner.
Rheem vs. Goodman: side by side
| Rheem | Goodman | |
|---|---|---|
| Parent company | Rheem Manufacturing | Daikin |
| Sister brands | Ruud, WeatherKing | Amana (under license), Daikin |
| Product tiers | Endeavor Line split systems, from single-stage to variable-speed | Single brand line, from basic single-stage to variable-speed |
| Registration window | 90 days | 60 days |
| Registered coverage | 10-year conditional parts (ACs and heat pumps); conditional unit replacement on some models | 10-year parts + lifetime heat exchanger (furnaces); 10-year unit replacement on select models |
| Labor coverage | Not included | Not included |
| If not registered | 5-year parts | 5-year parts |
| Notable extra | Older Rheem certificates used a 60-day window; your certificate governs | Lifetime compressor limited warranty on select ACs for the original registered owner |
| New-system refrigerant | R-454B (Endeavor Line) | R-32 |
| Altitude setup (example manual) | Set up per the installation instructions; overfiring shows as a limit code (22 on 802PA displays) | Different orifices above 2,000 ft; high-altitude kits listed for some installs |
| Selling the house | Conditional coverage generally does not transfer | Enhanced coverage stays with the original registered owner |
Two different warranty philosophies
Rheem calls its long coverage “conditional”: register within 90 days (older certificates said 60) and air conditioners and heat pumps get 10 years of parts instead of 5; some models add a conditional unit replacement. Goodman asks for registration within 60 days and, once registered, gives 10 years of parts, a lifetime heat exchanger limited warranty on gas furnaces, a lifetime compressor limited warranty on select ACs and a 10-year unit replacement on select models.
Read both as “for the original registered owner.” Rheem’s conditional terms generally don’t transfer, and Goodman’s enhanced coverage lasts while the original owner or spouse owns and lives in the home.
Refrigerant: R-454B vs. R-32
Rheem’s Endeavor Line split systems are listed with R-454B. Goodman, with Amana and Daikin, moved its new heat pump systems to R-32, a single-component refrigerant. Both are A2L refrigerants, both replace R-410A, and neither mixes with older systems, so an outdoor-only replacement needs a compatible indoor coil either way.
Service and diagnostics
Many Rheem furnaces have a small numeric display (for example, code 10 alternating with another code means a one-hour soft lockout caused by that second fault). Goodman furnaces flash an LED count. Neither approach is better; what matters is that the technician reads and records the code before cycling power.
Altitude
Both brands’ gas furnaces need their manuals’ high-altitude setup at metro elevations; Goodman’s literature calls for different orifices above 2,000 feet. An overfiring furnace trips its limit on either brand.
What matters more than the logo in Colorado
- Altitude conversion. Every brand’s furnace needs its manual’s high-altitude setup at metro elevations. Ask for the gas-pressure, combustion and temperature-rise numbers at startup. Our altitude calculator shows what it means for heat output.
- A load calculation. A Manual J sized system beats a bigger box from a better brand. See heat pump sizing at altitude.
- Ducts. Leaky or undersized ducts cancel out premium equipment. If one room never keeps up, read why one room is colder.
- Registration. All of these brands cut coverage roughly in half if the equipment isn’t registered on time. Get the confirmation in writing.

Questions
Is Rheem better than Goodman?
They are comparable mainstream brands. Rheem offers a longer registration window on current certificates; Goodman offers lifetime heat exchanger coverage on registered furnaces. Installation quality matters more than the badge.
Do Rheem or Goodman warranties transfer to a new owner?
The long conditional or enhanced terms generally stay with the original registered owner. A new owner usually gets the remaining base parts coverage; check the certificate.
What refrigerant does each use?
Rheem’s Endeavor Line uses R-454B; Goodman uses R-32 in its new heat pump systems.
Is Ruud the same as Rheem?
Yes, Ruud is a Rheem brand and shares many components and diagnostics.
