Rheem Repair in Denver

Rheem makes furnaces, air conditioners and heat pumps as well as water heaters, and its HVAC equipment is common across the Denver metro. Many Rheem furnaces report problems with a numeric code on a small display, which makes diagnosis easier if you know what the numbers mean. This page explains those codes, Rheem's registration requirements and what Colorado conditions do to Rheem systems.

Rheem service calls we see in Colorado

Rheem furnace calls in the Denver area tend to cluster around ignition and airflow. A furnace that tries to light four times and then stops is in a one-hour soft lockout; a furnace that heats for a while and then shuts down with the blower running may be tripping its main limit because of a clogged filter, closed registers or a weak blower. High-efficiency Rheem furnaces also stop when the PVC intake or exhaust is blocked by snow, or when the condensate drain freezes.

In summer, Rheem and other split-system air conditioners fail in predictable ways here: capacitors and contactors, refrigerant leaks, and outdoor coils clogged with cottonwood or dented by hail. Our AC repair visits include a coil inspection for exactly that reason.

Before you call, check the basics: thermostat mode and setpoint, a clean filter, the furnace service switch and the breaker. On a high-efficiency Rheem, make sure both PVC pipes outside are clear of snow and frost. Then read the display and write down the code. If the code is 10 alternating with another number, the furnace is waiting out a lockout; note both numbers, because the second one is the real problem. If you smell gas at any point, leave the house and call your gas utility from outside.

Reading a Rheem furnace's fault display

Many Rheem gas furnaces, including the 802PA series, use a 7-segment display on the control board. In normal operation it shows 0 in standby, H during gas heating, C during cooling or heat pump heating, and F for continuous fan. When there is a fault, it shows a numeric code, and if two faults are active, it alternates between them. Code 10 alternating with another code means the furnace is in a one-hour soft lockout caused by that second fault.

The examples below come from the Rheem 802PA installation instructions. Other Rheem furnaces may use different codes or LED flashes, so check the label on your furnace door. Code 14, unexpected flame, is a safety concern; turn the furnace off and call rather than waiting out the lockout.

Rheem warranty registration

Rheem's conditional parts warranties depend on registration. Rheem's current residential split-system warranty document asks owners to register within 90 days of installation or of closing on a home; older Rheem warranty documents used a 60-day window. Registered air conditioners and heat pumps get 10 years of conditional parts coverage, versus 5 years if unregistered. Some Rheem models carry a conditional unit replacement benefit that applies only if the unit was registered.

Because the deadline has changed over the years, the warranty certificate that came with your equipment is the authority for your system. Conditional coverage generally does not transfer to later owners, who receive the remaining base parts warranty. If you are unsure of your status, Rheem's product pages include a warranty and registration lookup by serial number.

Altitude and refrigerant notes

Like every gas furnace, a Rheem furnace installed in the Denver metro needs to be set up for altitude according to its installation instructions. A furnace that overfires at altitude will trip its limit (code 22 on 802PA-style displays), while marginal combustion air or venting causes ignition and flame problems. We measure gas pressure and temperature rise on every Rheem heating call.

Rheem's newer Endeavor Line split systems are listed with R-454B refrigerant. Older Rheem equipment uses R-410A and remains serviceable, but you cannot mix refrigerants, so replacing only the outdoor unit on an older system means checking coil compatibility.

Rheem and Ruud: the same company

Ruud is a Rheem brand; Ruud's website is operated by Rheem Manufacturing Company. Rheem and Ruud equipment is closely related, so diagnostic approaches and many parts are shared. If you have a Ruud system, our separate Ruud page covers that brand's specifics.

Whichever badge is on the cabinet, we repair it in or out of warranty, with upfront written pricing and 24/7 emergency service across the metro.

Repair or replace your Rheem system

Single-component failures, like an igniter, flame sensor, inducer, capacitor or blower motor, are usually worth repairing. Repeated limit trips on a furnace that has never been right may point to duct or sizing problems that a part will not fix. A failed compressor or heat exchanger on an older, unregistered system is where we price replacement alongside repair.

If you are considering a heat pump or a new furnace, our heat pump vs furnace guide and Colorado NOx rules guide are good starting points.

Rheem Error Codes

CodeWhat it usually means
10One-hour soft lockout; alternates with the code that caused it
11Failed ignition four times in a row (one-hour lockout)
13Flame lost five times in a row (one-hour lockout)
14Unexpected flame detected (one-hour lockout)
22Main limit open during a gas heat call for more than 150 seconds
61Blower declared non-operational after main limit open more than 150 seconds

Codes differ by model and control board. Check the chart on your unit's door panel before acting on any code.

Rheem FAQs

What does a 0, H, C or F on my Rheem furnace display mean?

On 802PA-style controls, 0 is standby with no faults, H is gas heating, C is cooling or heat pump heating, and F is continuous fan. These are normal states, not faults.

How long do I have to register a Rheem system?

Rheem's current residential split-system warranty document says within 90 days of installation or home closing; older documents said 60 days. Check the certificate for your model.

My Rheem furnace shows 11. What should I do?

Code 11 means ignition failed four times in a row and the furnace is in a one-hour lockout. Check that the gas supply is on and the filter is clean; if it repeats, book furnace repair.

Is Rheem the same as Ruud?

Ruud is a Rheem brand, and Ruud's website is run by Rheem Manufacturing Company. The equipment is closely related.

Does MrFixer repair Rheem heat pumps?

Yes, in or out of warranty, across the Denver metro. See heat pump repair or call (720) 466-7983.
