Furnace Repair in Castle Pines

Castle Pines is our home base, and it is one of the highest-elevation suburbs on the south side of the metro at roughly 6,500 feet. Most furnaces here sit in homes that went up in Castle Pines North between the mid-1980s and the mid-2000s, which means a lot of equipment is now on its second or third decade. When yours quits on a cold night, we can usually be there the same day.

What wears out first in Castle Pines North furnaces

Homebuilding in Castle Pines North started in 1984, reached about 1,000 homes by 1997 and roughly 3,000 by 2005. Neighborhoods such as Royal Hill, King's Crossing, Glen Oaks and The Retreat came first; the Buffalo Trail and Daniels Gate Road areas filled in later. Even where the original furnace has been swapped out, a replacement installed in the 2000s is now close to 20 years old itself.

On furnaces that age, the repeat failures are predictable: hot surface igniters that crack, flame sensors coated with oxide, draft inducer motors with worn bearings, and pressure switches that stop closing as the vent or condensate path gets restricted. Blower motors and run capacitors fail too, especially on systems that also move air for central AC all summer.

Altitude adds its own layer. Furnace manufacturers require input to be reduced about 4 percent for every 1,000 feet above sea level once you are above 2,000 feet, and they call for a high-altitude pressure switch above 4,000 feet. At this elevation that works out to roughly a quarter of the sea-level rating. A unit that was never properly converted can run rich, soot the heat exchanger, or trip its safeties on the coldest mornings when it runs longest.

Castle Pines Climate Note

At about 6,559 ft, gas furnaces lose ~4% capacity per 1,000 ft above sea level. Equipment must be sized larger and combustion adjusted for thinner air. Indoor RH commonly drops below 10% in winter — whole-home humidifiers are nearly essential.

How we troubleshoot a no-heat call

We start with safety. Every furnace call includes a carbon monoxide check and a combustion safety test, because a cracked heat exchanger or a blocked flue is a bigger problem than a cold house. From there we read the control board fault codes, check gas pressure at the valve, verify the orifices and pressure switch match the altitude, measure temperature rise across the heat exchanger, and inspect the vent and condensate lines.

Our trucks carry common igniters, sensors, inducers, capacitors, boards and universal motors for Trane, Lennox, Carrier, Goodman, Bryant and Rheem equipment, so most repairs get finished on the first visit. You get a flat-rate price before any work begins, the diagnostic is free when you go ahead with the repair, and nights and weekends do not carry overtime charges.

Newer homes in The Canyons

East of I-25, The Canyons welcomed its first residents around the start of 2020 and is planned to keep building for decades. Those furnaces are high-efficiency condensing units, and the calls we see on young equipment are usually installation-related rather than worn parts: condensate traps that were never primed, drain lines that freeze where they exit the house, intake and exhaust terminations placed where drifting snow can block them, and thermostats wired for the wrong stage. If your home is still under a builder or manufacturer warranty, tell us when you call so we can document the problem the way the warranty requires.

Repair or replace? Permits, gas service and rebates

A furnace with a sound heat exchanger and one failed part is almost always worth repairing. We start talking about replacement when the heat exchanger is cracked, when an 80 percent furnace from the 1990s needs a second major part in a season, or when parts are no longer available.

If you do replace, permits for homes inside city limits come from the City of Castle Pines Building Department, which treats furnace and air conditioner replacements as 1-Stop permits that need an application and job value but no plan review, with inspections done by city staff. Castle Pines Village south of the city is unincorporated, so replacements there go through Douglas County instead.

Most homes here buy natural gas from Black Hills Energy, whose 2026 Colorado rebate program covers furnaces of at least 90 percent AFUE installed during 2026, with applications due by January 31, 2027. Hidden Pointe is served by Xcel Energy, which runs its own heating rebates. Program rules change every year, so we confirm the current requirements before you buy.

Furnace Repair FAQs — Castle Pines

Do you service furnaces in Castle Pines Village as well as the city?

Yes. The village is a separate, unincorporated gated community, so a replacement there is permitted through Douglas County rather than the City of Castle Pines. Repairs work the same either way; just let us know about gate access when you book.

My furnace was swapped out years ago. Was it set up for this altitude?

We check. A correct high-altitude setup means the right gas orifices or manifold pressure and the high-altitude pressure switch the manufacturer specifies above 4,000 feet. We look at the rating plate, the conversion labels and the actual gas pressure during the visit.

Why does my condensate line freeze in January?

Condensing furnaces drain water continuously. If the line exits the house in a shaded, wind-exposed spot or has no slope, it can freeze and shut the furnace down through its pressure switch. We reroute or protect the drain so it does not keep happening.

Who supplies gas to my house?

Black Hills Energy serves most of the city, while Xcel Energy serves Hidden Pointe. Check your gas bill; it determines which rebate program applies if you replace the furnace.
