AC Installation & Replacement in Castle Pines
MrFixer is based in Castle Pines, so these are our own streets. At about 6,560 feet, the city sits higher than almost anywhere else we work, and that changes how a cooling system should be sized. Most installs here are replacements of the original equipment in Castle Pines North, with newer homes in The Canyons and the gated Village adding their own requirements.
Sizing a cooling system at 6,500 feet
Air at this elevation is noticeably thinner than in Denver, so both coils move less heat per pass and the condenser fan has less dense air to work with. ACHR News cites industry guidance of about a 0.92 cooling-capacity correction at 5,000 feet; at our elevation the correction is larger. The answer is not to grab the next size up. It is to run a Manual J load calculation with the right altitude inputs, then pick equipment whose published performance holds up at that design condition.
The other side of the calculation is the climate. Nights here cool off sharply, humidity is low, and large windows facing the Front Range carry much of the afternoon load. Shading, glass, and attic insulation often move the number more than square footage does.

Castle Pines Climate Note
At about 6,559 ft, gas furnaces lose ~4% capacity per 1,000 ft above sea level. Equipment must be sized larger and combustion adjusted for thinner air. Indoor RH commonly drops below 10% in winter — whole-home humidifiers are nearly essential.

Replacing the original systems in Castle Pines North
Castle Pines North was built from 1984 into the mid-2000s, about 3,259 homes ranging from production neighborhoods to custom estates. Any condenser still original to that era almost certainly runs on R-22, and even the first replacements are now aging. A new split system today uses R-454B or R-32, so the indoor coil is replaced with the outdoor unit; we reuse the line set only when it is the right size and passes a pressure test.
Larger homes in neighborhoods like The Retreat and Glen Oaks often have two systems or zoning. We size each zone separately, since a basement and an upper floor rarely need the same capacity.
Placement, hail, and HOA review
The city sits in the heart of Hail Alley, and the elevation means more stones reach the ground intact. We place condensers away from roof valleys and downspouts, on a level pad with clearance for airflow, and can add a hail guard where the exposure is severe.
Castle Pines Village, The Canyons, and many Castle Pines North neighborhoods have architectural review. Relocating a condenser, adding a second one, or changing screening can require approval, so check with your HOA before we schedule installation.
CORE Electric, Black Hills gas, and the heat pump question
Most homes in Castle Pines buy electricity from CORE Electric Cooperative and gas from Black Hills Energy; Hidden Pointe is served by Xcel for both. That split affects the economics of a heat pump. Running one as the primary heat source and keeping the gas furnace for the coldest nights, the dual-fuel approach, is usually the most practical way to try electric heat at this altitude.
Colorado's 2026 heat pump credit is $1,000 per air-source system, claimed by the contractor with at least $333 discounted on your invoice, and Power Ahead Colorado pays $1,500 for cold-climate units when we file before work starts. Ask CORE what it offers, and if you enroll in its Cool Credits program, we can install a compatible ecobee or Honeywell thermostat.

Air Conditioning Installation FAQs — Castle Pines
Who issues the permit for a new AC in Castle Pines?
Inside city limits, AC and furnace replacements are 1-Stop permits from the City of Castle Pines Building Department. Castle Pines Village is unincorporated and goes through Douglas County Building Division.
Does a home at 6,500 feet need a bigger air conditioner?
Not automatically. Capacity drops with altitude, but a proper Manual J often shows the original unit was already oversized. We size to the calculated load.
Does my HOA need to approve a new condenser?
If it moves, grows noticeably, or needs new screening, likely yes. A replacement in the same spot is usually simpler, but confirm with your HOA.
Is a heat pump practical this high up?
Cold-climate models work at our winter temperatures, and pairing one with the gas furnace removes the risk on the coldest nights. Our guide on whether heat pumps work in Denver winters covers the details.
Do you install in gated Castle Pines Village?
Yes. Village homes are unincorporated, so the permit goes through Douglas County, and the Village's architectural rules apply to any change in equipment location or screening. We coordinate access and timing with you before install day.
