Heat Pump Installation in Castle Pines
We're based in Castle Pines, so we know the conditions here firsthand. At about 6,560 feet, the city sits well above most of the metro, and most homes buy gas from Black Hills Energy and electricity from CORE Electric Cooperative rather than Xcel. Both facts change how a heat pump should be sized and paid for.
Altitude is the first sizing question
Air at 6,500 feet is noticeably thinner than in Denver. Fans move less mass of air per cubic foot, and outdoor coils pick up less heat. NREL measured about 5–7% less capacity than sea-level ratings in Golden at roughly 5,860 feet, and the effect grows with elevation. We size from a room-by-room Manual J at the Douglas County design temperature of about 4°F, then apply the manufacturer's altitude data rather than the nameplate rating.
Ridgetop lots catch wind, while lower streets near drainages can collect cold air on still nights. We look at where the outdoor unit will sit, how snow drifts there and where the roof sheds, and we raise the unit so defrost water drains away.

Castle Pines Climate Note
At about 6,559 ft, gas furnaces lose ~4% capacity per 1,000 ft above sea level. Equipment must be sized larger and combustion adjusted for thinner air. Indoor RH commonly drops below 10% in winter — whole-home humidifiers are nearly essential.

Which homes suit which system
Castle Pines North was built out from 1984 to the mid-2000s, and its roughly 3,259 homes range from production neighborhoods like Glen Oaks and Buffalo Trail to custom homes in The Retreat and Royal Hill. In the 1990s and 2000s homes, many owners need a new AC before they need a new furnace. A heat pump in place of that AC, with the furnace as backup, is the most common upgrade we recommend.
Larger custom homes often have two or three systems. Converting one zone at a time, starting with the one whose AC is oldest, spreads out the cost. The Canyons, east of I-25, is new construction with modern ducts. Owners building there now should know Power Ahead Colorado excludes new construction, so incentives work differently for those homes.
Rebates: why Xcel numbers don't apply here
Many online guides quote Xcel Energy heat pump rebates. Those apply only to Xcel customers, and in Castle Pines that's mainly the Hidden Pointe neighborhood. CORE's energy-efficiency page didn't list a heat pump rebate when we checked in November 2026, so call CORE Member Services at (800) 332-9540 to confirm. Black Hills Energy's 2026 Colorado gas rebate application has no electric heat pump measure. For dual fuel, though, it pays $350 for a 95% AFUE furnace or $375 for 97% if you replace the furnace in 2026.
Two incentives apply regardless of utility. The Colorado heat pump tax credit is $1,000 for an air-source system in 2026, and at least $333 comes off your invoice. Castle Pines is a DRCOG member, so Power Ahead Colorado pays $1,500 for a cold-climate air-source heat pump in an existing home if the contractor gets pre-approval before work starts. Equipment installed after 2025 no longer qualifies for the federal 25C credit.
Running costs and the panel
At current prices, gas from a high-efficiency furnace generally costs less per unit of heat than a heat pump. Your gas comes from Black Hills and your electricity from CORE, so plug your own rates into the comparison in heat pump vs. furnace in Colorado. Dual fuel lets you set the switchover where your rates favor each fuel. It also usually avoids adding 10 kW or more of backup strip heat, which many 1980s and 1990s panels can't handle without an upgrade.
Permits: city or county?
Inside city limits, the City of Castle Pines Building Department handles furnace and AC replacements as 1-Stop permits. We confirm with the city how a heat pump conversion is classified. Castle Pines Village is unincorporated, so permits there go through Douglas County's Building Division. We file in the right jurisdiction, coordinate any electrical permit and schedule the inspection.

Heat Pump Installation FAQs — Castle Pines
Do Xcel heat pump rebates apply in Castle Pines?
Only for Xcel customers, mainly Hidden Pointe. Most homes have Black Hills gas and CORE electric, so the state credit and Power Ahead are the dependable incentives. Ask CORE about any co-op program.
Does altitude make heat pumps a bad idea at 6,500 feet?
No, but it changes sizing. Expect less capacity than the sea-level rating and choose equipment by its published low-temperature output with an altitude correction.
Can I get Power Ahead's rebate in The Canyons?
Not on a new home. Power Ahead covers retrofits in existing buildings, not new construction.
Who issues the permit in Castle Pines Village?
Douglas County's Building Division, because the Village is unincorporated. Homes inside city limits use the City of Castle Pines.
