Heat Pump Repair in Brighton

In Brighton, electricity comes from United Power and natural gas from Xcel Energy. Many homes built during the 2000s growth wave have a heat pump paired with a gas furnace, and the way those two share the load affects both comfort and two separate utility bills. That's where many of our repair calls begin.

Two utilities, one system

A dual fuel system uses the heat pump, which runs on United Power electricity, until the outdoor temperature drops to a set changeover point, then switches to the gas furnace on Xcel. If that changeover is set wrong, or the outdoor sensor has failed, one bill jumps while the other barely moves. A December electric bill that spikes while gas use stays flat often means the heat pump is fighting cold it shouldn't, or electric backup strips are running when the furnace should be.

We check the outdoor sensor, thermostat configuration and wiring, then set a changeover temperature that fits the equipment. Our dual fuel guide explains how to think about that setting.

Brighton Climate Note

Brighton sits on the open eastern plains at ~5,000 ft — strong wind exposure increases infiltration losses, and winter cold snaps can be harsher than the foothills. Properly sized equipment with weatherized ductwork is critical.

Cold snaps on the plains

Brighton's average January low is about 16°F, and the record is -26°F. On open plains with little to block the wind, a cold front arrives fast. During those spells, it's expected for the furnace or backup heat to take over. What's not expected is a heat pump that can't keep up at 30°F, a coil that stays iced for hours, or a system that runs constantly without warming the house.

Those usually come down to low refrigerant from a leak, a defrost control failure, a failing outdoor fan motor or capacitor, or a reversing valve that's sticking. We test before replacing parts, and you'll see a written price first. When the cold snap is the problem rather than the equipment, we'll show you the readings and adjust the backup settings so the house holds temperature through the next one.

Dust, wind and the outdoor coil

Brighton still sits among farm fields, and wind carries dust, chaff and cottonwood fluff into outdoor coils. A matted coil cuts airflow, which makes a heat pump frost faster in winter and run hotter in summer. Gently hosing the coil from the inside out in spring and fall helps, as long as the power is off.

Wind also drives snow into units on open lots, and hail regularly crosses Adams County. After any storm, look at the fins. Flattened fins hurt heating as well as cooling, since a heat pump uses that coil year-round.

Brighton Crossing, Bromley Park and newer equipment

Newer subdivisions like Brighton Crossing and Bromley Park filled in during the 2000s and are still growing. Many heat pumps there are within manufacturer warranty, but coverage often depends on registration. Trane gives longer coverage only to units registered within 60 days of installation, and labor isn't included. Check your closing documents for the registration confirmation or the installer's name. We'll verify coverage before ordering a part.

Near the historic downtown along Bridge Street, older homes with heat pumps are usually retrofits, where duct size and electrical capacity can limit performance.

Rebates, permits and replacement

United Power members have received heat pump rebates (255 of them in 2025, by the Colorado Sun's count); since we couldn't verify the cooperative's 2026 figures, ask United Power directly. On top of that, Power Ahead Colorado pays $1,500 per cold-climate system in an existing home, and Colorado's tax credit is worth $1,000. The federal 25C credit ended after 2025.

The City of Brighton's Building Permit Counter handles permits through its OpenGov portal. We file and schedule inspections for replacements.

Heat Pump Repair FAQs — Brighton

Why did my electric bill jump but my gas bill didn't?

In a Brighton dual fuel home, the changeover setting or outdoor sensor may be keeping the heat pump or electric backup running when the furnace should take over.

Does United Power offer heat pump rebates?

It has offered member rebates, but we couldn't confirm 2026 amounts. Check with United Power before planning on one.

Is my heat pump in a newer Brighton home under warranty?

Probably for parts, if it was registered. We check before ordering parts.

How should I clean my outdoor coil?

Turn off power, then gently rinse from the inside out with a garden hose. Never use a pressure washer, which bends the fins.
