Heat Pump Repair in Sherrelwood
Most Sherrelwood houses were standing by 1970, and many of those ranches cooled with swamp coolers for decades. The heat pumps now showing up in them are often recent conversions bolted onto ductwork sized for a furnace in 1960, and that history explains a lot of the repair calls we get here.
Old ducts, new heat pump
A furnace tolerates small, leaky ducts because it heats air to well over 100 degrees. A heat pump delivers cooler supply air and depends on moving a lot of it. When a 1959 or 1962 Sherrelwood ranch keeps its original trunk and a couple of undersized returns, the indoor coil starves for air. In summer that ices the coil; in winter it drives head pressure up and can trip the compressor on its safety switch.
Before we replace any part on a converted system we measure static pressure. If the numbers are off the chart, the fix may be a second return or a larger filter grille, not a new compressor.
Leaky ducts in a crawlspace or attic matter more on a heat pump, too, because every bit of lost air is warm air you paid to make at a lower temperature. Sealing the joints we can reach and adding insulation on exposed runs is often part of making a converted Sherrelwood system work the way it was sold. We point out what we find and let you decide what to fix.

Sherrelwood Climate Note
Sherrelwood sits at about 5,292 feet north of Denver. The dry Front Range air is why evaporative coolers are still common alongside central air here.

Defrost trouble in a wind-exposed yard
Some outdoor units here were tucked where the swamp cooler drain or roof runoff used to land. A heat pump sitting in a drip line freezes into a block of ice that the defrost cycle cannot clear. Normal defrost lasts several minutes and leaves steam rising off the unit; ice that keeps building over hours is a fault.
We check the defrost board, sensor and reversing valve, then fix the cause: a gutter extension, a raised pad or a stand that keeps the coil above packed snow.
Backup strips and a 1960s electrical panel
Converting a gas-heated ranch to an all-electric heat pump often brings in electric heat strips. In an older home with a small panel, those strips can trip breakers or run hot at the lugs when they all come on during a cold snap. If your heat pump only misbehaves on the coldest mornings, the strips or their breaker are a good place to look.
We test each element and sequencer, check the breaker size against the strip kit and tell you plainly if the panel itself needs an electrician. In many cases keeping the gas furnace as backup avoids the issue; our dual-fuel guide explains that setup.
Is it still under warranty?
Because so many Sherrelwood heat pumps are only a few years old, the first question on a failed compressor or coil is the warranty. Many manufacturers give a longer parts warranty only when the unit was registered online soon after installation, often within 60 days. If the installer never registered it, you may be on the shorter base coverage. Dig out the paperwork or the model and serial number, and we will look it up before we price a repair.
Labor is usually separate from the manufacturer's parts coverage, so ask what your installer promised.
Who handles permits here
Sherrelwood is unincorporated Adams County, so a heat pump replacement goes through Adams County Community and Economic Development and its contractor registration. Repairs do not need that step. When replacement wins, the county's DRCOG membership opens the $1,500 Power Ahead rebate, the state's credit shaves at least $333 from your bill, and 25C has expired. Check your bill for the electric provider before counting on any utility rebate.

Heat Pump Repair FAQs — Sherrelwood
My converted Sherrelwood ranch heats unevenly. Is the heat pump too small?
Often the ducts are the limit, not the unit. We measure airflow and static pressure first.
Why does my breaker trip only on very cold mornings?
That is when backup heat strips run. A failed sequencer or undersized circuit is common in older panels.
How do I know if my heat pump warranty was registered?
Check the manufacturer's site with the serial number, or send it to us and we will check before quoting.
Should the old evaporative cooler come out?
If the heat pump now does the cooling, removing or sealing the old cooler and its roof opening stops heat loss and drafts in winter.
Is ice on the outdoor unit always a problem?
Light frost that clears in defrost is normal. Thick ice that keeps growing is not.
