Heat Pump Repair in Lochbuie

Lochbuie has two very different housing stocks: manufactured homes that date back to the Spacious Living park and new production houses in Silver Peaks, Bella Vista and Lochbuie Station. Heat pump repair looks different in each, from a packaged unit beside a single-wide to a builder-installed split system that is still under warranty.

New builds: start with the warranty

In Silver Peaks and the other subdivisions built since about 2016, many heat pumps are less than ten years old. Before anyone replaces a compressor or outdoor coil, find out whether the builder's installer registered the equipment. Manufacturers commonly require registration within a short window to grant the longer parts warranty, and production installers do not always do it. Builder workmanship coverage is separate and usually shorter.

Send us the model and serial number from the outdoor unit and we will check coverage before we price anything. If parts are covered, you pay for labor and refrigerant only.

Lochbuie Climate Note

Lochbuie sits at about 5,043 feet on open plains northeast of Denver, where outdoor units on open lots collect dust and grass and side-wall furnace vents can be blocked by drifting snow.

Common faults on builder-grade systems

The repair list on young Lochbuie systems is fairly predictable: a weak run capacitor that leaves the outdoor fan humming, a contactor pitted by summer cycling, a thermostat that was never configured for the heat pump's auxiliary stage, and slow leaks at brazed joints or service valves. A system that was charged in a hurry during construction can also run low from day one.

We check charge by superheat and subcooling, not by feel, and we leak-test before adding refrigerant.

Thermostats deserve a second look on new Lochbuie homes. Builders often install a basic model, and if it was set up as a standard AC with gas heat, the heat pump may never run in heating mode at all; the furnace or strips do the work instead. A quick review of the installer settings, the O/B reversing valve wire and the auxiliary lockout can restore what you paid for without replacing a single part.

Manufactured homes and packaged units

Some homes in the original Spacious Living area use packaged heat pumps that sit beside the home and connect to the floor duct through a flexible crossover. When that crossover tears or sags, heated air dumps under the home and the system looks weak even though the equipment is fine. We inspect the crossover and belly duct along with the unit. Older manufactured homes still on window or wall AC are good ductless candidates; see our mini-split guide.

Wind, snow and the defrost cycle

Lochbuie sits on open ground near I-76 with a 0°F design temperature on the Weld County side. In a blowing snowstorm, outdoor units frost quickly and defrost often. A unit that never seems to clear, or that blows cold air indoors for long periods, may have a failed defrost sensor or a reversing valve that is not shifting. Lifting the unit on a stand keeps drifts and meltwater from refreezing around the base.

Bills, utilities and permits

United Power supplies electricity here, and gas is Atmos or Xcel depending on the address. If your all-electric home's bill spikes, check whether AUX heat has been running. Equipment swaps need a Town permit, inspected by SAFEbuilt, and only Town-licensed contractors may pull one; we are licensed there. Since the Town belongs to DRCOG, a resale or occupied home that swaps equipment can collect $1,500 from Power Ahead and $1,000 through the state credit; houses still being built cannot.

Heat Pump Repair FAQs — Lochbuie

My Silver Peaks heat pump is three years old and failed. Who pays?

Possibly the manufacturer, if it was registered. We check coverage by serial number first.

Why is my manufactured home cold even though the unit runs?

Often the flexible crossover under the floor has split or dropped. We inspect it on every call.

Can a wrong thermostat setting make my heat pump useless?

Yes. If it was configured as AC plus gas heat, the heat pump may never heat. We check the setup.

How do I tell normal defrost from a problem?

Defrost lasts a few minutes with steam. Ice that keeps building, or long cold blasts indoors, needs service.

Does Lochbuie require a licensed contractor?

Yes, the Town requires contractor licensing for permitted work, which we hold.
