Air Conditioner Repair in Englewood
Many Englewood houses were built in the 1940s and 1950s, long before central air was standard, so the cooling systems we repair here are often retrofits: a condenser in a narrow side yard, a coil perched on a basement furnace, and ducts that were sized for heat. Getting those systems to cool well takes more than a recharge.
Why retrofitted AC struggles in smaller older homes
Cooling needs more airflow than heating, and ductwork in a compact postwar home was rarely designed for it. The result is a system that runs nonstop on hot afternoons, a coil that freezes, or bedrooms at the end of a long run that never cool down. One or two return grilles for the whole house is common, and that alone can limit what any air conditioner can deliver.
Outside, condensers squeezed into tight side yards or against fences recirculate their own hot air, which raises pressures and wears out fan motors and capacitors faster. Leaves, seed fluff, and grass clippings packed into the coil do the same. A simple coil cleaning and some clearance can make a noticeable difference.

Englewood Climate Note
Older homes (1940s-60s) common in Englewood often have undersized HVAC, no insulation, and original gravity systems that need full replacement.

Swamp coolers and central air side by side
Evaporative coolers are still part of the picture in older Englewood homes; the city's own Energy Efficient Englewood program lists repairing or replacing air conditioners and swamp coolers as eligible projects. If your home has a swamp cooler and you are thinking about central air, or the reverse, we can talk through what fits the house. In the dry Front Range climate, a well-maintained evaporative cooler can carry a lot of the summer load.
Our AC diagnostic
We test the capacitor, contactor, and motors; read superheat and subcooling to judge the refrigerant charge; and measure static pressure and temperature split to see whether the ducts are the bottleneck. If refrigerant is low, we hunt for the leak. Brazed joints on older line sets and the evaporator coil itself are frequent suspects.
You get an upfront flat-rate price, and the diagnostic is free with the repair. There are no overtime fees for evening, weekend, or emergency calls. We repair Trane, Lennox, Carrier, Goodman, Bryant, Rheem, and other major brands.
Replacing an AC in Englewood: what is different
Englewood requires a Manual J load calculation and a Manual D duct design for all HVAC replacements or additions, effective July 1, 2024. That protects you from the most common mistake in older homes, which is installing a bigger air conditioner than the ducts can support. An oversized unit cools in short bursts, does a poor job removing moisture on humid days, and wears out sooner.
The city's Home Energy Rebates page lists rebates for new A/C systems and notes that city rebates require pre-approval before work starts, and it points to state and federal heat pump tax credits as well. Xcel Energy, the city's electric and gas utility, offers rebates on heat pumps installed to its quality-installation standard, evaporative coolers, and smart thermostats through participating contractors. Check current program details before you commit, since amounts and eligibility change.
When repair is the smart call
A failed capacitor, contactor, or fan motor is worth fixing on nearly any working system. An old R-22 unit with a leak, a dead compressor, or a system that has never cooled the house properly because of duct limits is where we would discuss replacement, a heat pump, or a ductless system for the rooms that never get cool. When it is close, we price the repair and the replacement side by side so you can compare the real numbers, not a sales pitch.

Air Conditioner Repair FAQs — Englewood
Why does my AC run all afternoon and the bedrooms are still warm?
In many older Englewood homes, the ducts and returns were sized for heating and cannot move enough air for cooling. Low refrigerant or a dirty coil can also cause it. We measure airflow and charge to tell which.
Will I need a load calculation to replace my air conditioner?
Yes. The city requires a Manual J and Manual D for all HVAC replacements or additions as of July 1, 2024. Repairs do not trigger that requirement.
Are there city rebates for a new AC?
The city's Home Energy Rebates program lists new A/C systems, and income-qualified homeowners may get Energy Efficient Englewood grants for AC or swamp cooler repair or replacement. City rebates require pre-approval before work starts.
Do you work on swamp coolers?
Our focus is central air conditioners and heat pumps. If you are weighing a swamp cooler against central air, we can explain the tradeoffs for your house.
