Air Conditioner Repair in Centennial
A Centennial air conditioner usually fails in one of two ways: an aging condenser from the 1990s or early 2000s finally gives out, or a June hailstorm flattens the coil fins and the system can no longer shed heat. We repair central air conditioners and heat pumps across the city and tell you plainly when a repair is worth the money.
Why Centennial air conditioners fail
Roughly seven in ten Centennial homes were built between 1970 and 1999, and many of them got central air either at construction or as an add-on later. That leaves a lot of condensers still running on R-22, the refrigerant whose U.S. production ended in 2020. When one of those systems develops a leak, topping it off gets harder to justify every year, and that changes the math on repair versus replacement.
On newer equipment, the usual failures are electrical: a run capacitor that has swelled after a few hot summers, a contactor with pitted points, or a condenser fan motor that overheats. Indoors, dirty evaporator coils and clogged filters cut airflow until the coil freezes into a block of ice, which most people notice as warm air from the vents and water around the furnace.

Centennial Climate Note
Newer Centennial homes are well-insulated and tight — proper ventilation and humidity management are key. Heat pump retrofits work especially well.

Hail, sun, and two-story hot spots
Colorado's severe hail days peak in early to mid-June, right as cooling season starts. Hail bends the thin aluminum fins on the outdoor coil, and a badly matted coil can lose much of its ability to reject heat, which drives up head pressure, trips the unit on high pressure, and shortens compressor life. Straightening fins helps with light damage. Heavy damage may be a homeowner's insurance conversation, and we document what we find.
The other common complaint in Centennial's two-story homes in neighborhoods like Willow Creek and Foxridge is a bedroom level that stays several degrees warmer than the main floor. Sometimes that is a refrigerant or airflow problem we can fix. Often it is ductwork that was never sized to move enough cool air upstairs, and we will tell you which one it is rather than selling a bigger unit.
What we check on an AC call
Every AC diagnostic covers the electrical side (capacitor values, contactor, fan and compressor amperage), the refrigerant side (superheat and subcooling readings rather than guessing from a single pressure), and the airflow side (filter, blower speed, coil condition, static pressure). If refrigerant is low, we look for the leak instead of just adding more, because a system that is low has a leak somewhere.
You get a flat-rate price before we start, the diagnostic is free with the repair, and there is no overtime charge for evening or weekend calls. We carry common capacitors, contactors, and fan motors on the truck for Trane, Lennox, Carrier, Goodman, Bryant, Rheem, and other major brands.
Keep repairing it, or replace it?
Replacing a capacitor or fan motor on a 10-year-old system is a straightforward repair. A compressor failure, a major leak in an R-22 system, or a hail-destroyed coil on a unit past 15 years are the cases where replacement usually comes out ahead. If you replace, Centennial handles like-for-like AC replacement as a One-Stop permit through the city Building Division.
On rebates: Xcel Energy's Colorado program has not listed a standalone rebate for a basic central AC, but it does offer rebates for air-source and cold-climate heat pumps installed to its quality-installation standard by a participating contractor, plus evaporative coolers and smart thermostats. Because Centennial is split between Xcel Energy and CORE Electric Cooperative territory, check your bill before counting on any utility rebate.

Air Conditioner Repair FAQs — Centennial
My AC still uses R-22. Can it be repaired?
Usually, yes, for electrical parts like capacitors, contactors, and fan motors. A refrigerant leak is different: R-22 is no longer produced, so recharging is expensive and a leak will return. On an older R-22 system with a leak, we will show you the repair and replacement options side by side.
Hail hit my condenser. Does it need to be replaced?
Not always. Light fin damage can often be combed out. If the coil is badly flattened or punctured, we check pressures and temperatures to see how much capacity was lost and give you written findings you can share with your insurer.
Why is my upstairs so much hotter than downstairs?
In many of Centennial's two-story homes from the 1980s and 1990s, ducts to the second floor are long and small, and return air upstairs is limited. We measure airflow to see whether the issue is the equipment or the duct design before recommending anything.
Is a heat pump a good idea for a home here?
It can be, especially as a replacement for an aging AC. Cold-climate heat pumps qualify for Xcel Energy rebates when installed to their standard by a participating contractor, if Xcel is your electric utility. Some Centennial addresses are served by CORE Electric Cooperative instead.
