Air Conditioner Repair in Littleton

July afternoons in Littleton average around 85 degrees, with a record high of 99, which is mild by national standards but enough to expose any weakness in an air conditioner that was bolted onto an older house. Much of town was built in the 1950s and 1960s, and central air in those homes was frequently added later on ductwork designed for heat only. We repair central air conditioners and heat pumps throughout the area.

Add-on air conditioning and its common problems

When central air is added to a house built for furnace-only heating, the evaporator coil gets set on top of the furnace and the existing ducts have to carry cooling airflow, which is typically higher than heating airflow. In many postwar Littleton homes that means the coil is starved for air. A starved coil runs too cold, ices over, and eventually stops cooling altogether. You may see frost on the copper line at the outdoor unit or water pooling around the furnace once the ice melts.

We also see refrigerant line sets that were run long distances or through tight spaces to reach the backyard, and those joints are common leak points. On the outdoor unit, the usual repair list is a weak run capacitor, a failing contactor, or a condenser fan motor that has given up after years of summer heat.

Littleton Climate Note

Littleton sees more wildfire smoke days than north metro — air purification systems are popular here. Foothill exposure means more wind, less humidity.

Cooling a 1970s-1990s Littleton home

About half of the city's housing went up between 1970 and 1999, and those homes usually had central air from the start. The issue there is age. Original condensers from the 1990s often still run on R-22, which has not been produced in the U.S. since 2020, and leaks on those systems are costly to recharge. Evaporator coils from that era also develop small leaks at their bends. Before recharging, we find out where the refrigerant went.

How we diagnose an AC that is not keeping up

We start by measuring, not guessing: supply and return temperatures, superheat and subcooling, capacitor values, motor amperage, and static pressure across the coil. If the indoor coil is iced, we thaw it and find the cause, whether that is a filter, a blower setting, low refrigerant, or a duct restriction. You get a flat-rate price upfront, and the diagnostic is free with the repair.

We service Trane, Lennox, Carrier, Goodman, Bryant, Rheem, and other major brands, with common parts on the truck. Emergency service is available around the clock, without overtime fees.

Replacement, permits, and lower-cost cooling options

If the compressor has failed or an R-22 system is leaking, replacement is often the better value. Inside Littleton city limits, the residential permit guide lists air-conditioning equipment as work that generally requires a permit and inspection. For homes in Ken Caryl, Columbine, or other unincorporated areas with Littleton addresses, the county handles it.

Littleton's dry air also makes evaporative cooling practical in many homes. Xcel Energy, which supplies electricity in the city, offers rebates on evaporative coolers, heat pumps installed to its quality-installation standard, and smart thermostats through participating contractors. Xcel has not listed a rebate for a standard central AC on its own. A heat pump can replace an aging air conditioner and also share the heating load with your furnace.

Is your AC worth fixing?

Repairs like capacitors, contactors, and fan motors are good investments on most systems. Repeated leaks, a failed compressor on a unit over 12 to 15 years old, or chronic coil icing caused by ducts that were never sized for cooling are the situations where we would talk about replacement or duct work instead of another patch.

Air Conditioner Repair FAQs — Littleton

Why does my AC freeze up in my older ranch house?

In many 1950s and 1960s homes, the air conditioner was added later to ducts sized for heating only. Low airflow across the coil lets it ice over. A clogged filter or low refrigerant can do the same. We test airflow and refrigerant charge to find which it is.

Do I need a permit to replace my AC in Littleton?

Inside city limits, the residential permit guide says air-conditioning equipment generally requires a permit and inspection. Unincorporated areas with Littleton addresses, such as Ken Caryl and Columbine, permit through their county. Repairs do not need a permit.

Is a swamp cooler a reasonable option here?

Often, yes. The dry Front Range climate suits evaporative cooling, and Xcel Energy offers rebates on qualifying evaporative coolers. They work less well on the occasional humid, stormy afternoon, and they need seasonal startup and winterizing.

My condenser was installed in the late 1990s. Should I keep repairing it?

Electrical repairs are usually worth it. If it uses R-22 and has a leak, replacement typically makes more sense, because R-22 is no longer manufactured and the leak will keep costing you.
