Furnace Repair in Louisville
Louisville has three generations of heating systems: coal-era houses in Old Town, the subdivisions built during the 1980s and 1990s boom, and hundreds of brand-new homes rebuilt after the Marshall Fire. Furnace problems in a 30-year-old house have little in common with those in a three-year-old one. We diagnose based on what's actually installed in your home.
Three housing eras, three sets of furnace problems
Louisville began as a coal town in 1877, and most of the houses in Old Town were built long before central heat. Over the years they've had furnaces added in small basements and crawlspaces, sometimes with venting into old chimneys. In these homes we focus on draft, flue condition, combustion air and duct leakage, because a furnace in a confined space with a tired vent is where CO problems start.
From 1980 to 2000 the population more than tripled, from about 5,600 to nearly 19,000, and much of the city's housing dates from that period. Furnaces in those homes are either long-serving 80% units or their second replacement. Common failures include worn inducer motors, cracked hot-surface ignitors, failed pressure switches and blower motors that have run through decades of winters.
Then there are the rebuilds. The Marshall Fire destroyed 550 homes in Louisville, including 161 in Coal Creek Ranch alone, and by August 2026 the city reported 532 rebuilt or under construction. These new homes have modern high-efficiency furnaces and heat pumps, but they're also in the window when installation problems show up: condensate lines that weren't sloped correctly, intake and exhaust pipes too close together, thermostat or communicating-control setup errors, and gas pressure that was never adjusted for altitude.

Louisville Climate Note
Louisville sits at 5,401 ft. Wildfire smoke from the Marshall Fire and other regional fires has made advanced air filtration a must — we recommend MERV 13 or HEPA-bypass systems.

Altitude and wind matter here
At around 5,400 feet, furnaces here need high-altitude derating to burn cleanly. A replacement gas valve or burner set to sea-level specifications can over-fire, causing sooting, rollout trips or high CO readings. We check manifold pressure and temperature rise after every gas-side repair.
December 30, 2021 showed how strong winter winds get here. NCAR measured gusts up to 112 mph that day. Even ordinary windstorms can disrupt side-wall venting on high-efficiency furnaces and cause pressure-switch lockouts, so we inspect terminations and the vent's pitch and supports when that's the symptom.
How we troubleshoot and repair
Every visit starts with the furnace's fault history and a full ignition-sequence check. We then measure combustion and ambient CO, gas pressure, temperature rise and static pressure, and inspect the heat exchanger, flame sensor and condensate trap. For newer communicating systems, we check the control setup before replacing any parts, since a configuration error can look like a hardware failure.
Pricing is flat-rate and given in advance, with no overtime fees, and the diagnostic is free if you go ahead with the repair. We work on Trane, Lennox, Carrier, Goodman, Bryant, Rheem and other major brands, and we're available 24/7 for no-heat calls.
Replacing a furnace: local permits and incentives
The city issues a single Furnace/AC/Water Heater/Heat Pump permit, and it has to be pulled by a contractor licensed for mechanical work. Every permit requires a final inspection. High-efficiency gas appliances also need a 15-minute gas pressure test, done in person or on video, and direct-vent units get their exhaust vent checked for leaks.
Xcel Energy supplies both gas and electricity here. The city promotes heat pumps as its main alternative to gas heat, and Xcel offers rebates on heat pump systems. Boulder County's EnergySmart rebates are limited to income-qualified households in 2026, though free energy advising is still available to every homeowner.
Should you repair or replace?
For rebuild-era equipment that's only a few years old, repair is almost always the answer, and the problem is often an installation detail rather than a defective part. For a 1990s furnace that needs a heat exchanger or an inducer and board at once, replacement deserves a serious look. We'll show you the readings and give you the repair price so you can compare it against what a new system would involve.

Furnace Repair FAQs — Louisville
My Louisville home was rebuilt after the Marshall Fire. Why is the new furnace already acting up?
New systems often have setup or installation issues: a condensate line without proper slope, venting problems, thermostat configuration errors or gas pressure that wasn't adjusted for altitude. These are usually straightforward repairs once they're identified.
What permit is required for a furnace replacement?
The City of Louisville requires a Furnace/AC/Water Heater/Heat Pump permit pulled by a licensed mechanical contractor, plus a final inspection. Gas furnaces also need a pressure test, either in person or on video.
Who provides gas service in town?
Xcel Energy. If you smell gas, leave the home and call Xcel from outside. After the restoration work following the Marshall Fire, Xcel relit appliances directly for customers.
My Old Town Louisville furnace vents into the chimney. Is that a problem?
It can be. Older masonry chimneys may not draft well with modern appliances, especially after a water heater has been changed. We test draft and CO on every furnace call.
Are there rebates for a new heating system?
Xcel Energy offers heat pump rebates, and the city participates in Boulder County programs. In 2026 EnergySmart rebates are limited to income-qualified households. Check current terms before you buy.
