Furnace Repair in Lafayette
Lafayette went from a coal town of about 2,000 people in 1950 to roughly 23,000 by 2000, and most of its furnaces live in homes built during that half-century climb. Old Town still has houses from the mining years, while neighborhoods like Indian Peaks and Coal Creek Village came later. We track down what failed, test for safe combustion and tell you plainly whether the furnace is worth repairing.
Older houses in Old Town
Lafayette was platted in 1888, a few years after coal was found on the Miller farm, and mines operated nearby until 1956. Older homes in Old Town, the historic core around Public Road and Chester Street, have often been through several heating systems. Today many have forced-air furnaces tucked into small basements, crawlspaces or closets, with flues and ducts fitted into spaces that were never designed for them.
We check draft and flue condition on these homes, confirm the furnace has enough combustion air in a tight space, and run a carbon monoxide test. Undersized or patched ductwork often causes overheating and cycling on the high limit, so we measure airflow too.

The 1970s through 1990s subdivisions
The city's population tripled between 1970 and 2000. Many homes from that stretch, in established neighborhoods across the city, now have second-generation furnaces 15 to 25 years old. Typical repairs include hot-surface ignitors, flame sensors, inducer motors, pressure switches and blower motors and capacitors.
Some of these homes still have their first high-efficiency furnace, installed when 90%+ units became common. Condensate traps, drain lines and PVC vent pipes are the weak points on those, especially where a drain runs through a cold garage or along an exterior wall.
Snow, wind and vent terminations
Lafayette averages about 65 inches of snow a year, and the city's design criteria assume a 145 mph wind speed and a 40 psf snow load. That combination is hard on side-wall furnace vents. Drifting snow can bury an intake or exhaust, and wind can push exhaust back toward the intake or a nearby window if terminations are too close together.
If a high-efficiency furnace locks out after a storm, check that the outside PVC pipes are clear. When we repair a furnace that keeps tripping on venting, we look at termination placement as well as the pipe itself.
How we diagnose and repair
We read fault codes, run a full heating cycle and test each safety in order. Gas pressure, temperature rise and static pressure get measured, and a combustion and CO analysis closes out the visit. Our trucks carry parts for Trane, Lennox, Carrier, Goodman, Bryant, Rheem and other common brands, so most repairs are finished in one visit.
You'll see a flat-rate price before work begins, with no overtime fees, and the diagnostic is free when you approve the repair. Emergency service is available 24/7.
Lafayette's quick permits and replacement options
Under the City of Lafayette's rules, maintenance and repairs to a furnace are exempt from permits, but replacing one is not. The city offers contractor-only quick permits for furnace, AC and water heater replacements through its GovBuilt portal, typically processed in about two business days, and every subcontractor on the job must hold a City license. The city's 2024 code package, including the Metro Cohort Model Code energy provisions, took effect August 1, 2026.
The city is a partner in Boulder County's Switch Together heat pump program, and county residents can stack it with other rebates. If your furnace is near the end of its life, a heat pump paired with a gas furnace is worth comparing. We'll give you the numbers for repair and for each replacement option.
