Heat Pump Repair in Louisville
More than 500 Louisville homes have been rebuilt or are under construction since the Marshall Fire, and a large share of them heat with new heat pumps. Add the 1980s and 1990s homes around Coal Creek Ranch and the small houses of Old Town, and Louisville has one of the widest spreads of heat pump ages anywhere in Boulder County.
Rebuilt homes: first-year problems on new systems
A brand-new heat pump in a rebuilt home should run for years without trouble, but the first winter often reveals setup issues. The ones we find most: refrigerant charge set in warm weather and never checked under heating load, thermostats configured with the wrong auxiliary heat staging, condensate lines that freeze where they leave the house, and variable-speed systems whose communicating controls were never fully commissioned.
None of these mean the equipment is bad. They mean the system needs a proper check under real conditions. If the builder's HVAC contractor is still responsive, start there. If not, we can test and correct the setup and document what we found.

Louisville Climate Note
Louisville sits at 5,401 ft. Wildfire smoke from the Marshall Fire and other regional fires has made advanced air filtration a must — we recommend MERV 13 or HEPA-bypass systems.

Registering the warranty after a rebuild
Rebuild projects juggle hundreds of details, and manufacturer warranty registration is easy to miss. Many brands extend parts coverage only if the unit is registered within a set window after installation. If you moved back into a rebuilt Louisville home in the last year or two, look up your outdoor unit's serial number on the manufacturer's site now. If it is not registered, ask your builder what happened; some manufacturers will still accept registration with proof of the install date.
Smoke, ash and fine dust in the coils
Wildfire smoke and the construction dust from years of rebuilding have coated plenty of outdoor coils and indoor filters around town. A dirty indoor coil restricts airflow, which in heating mode drives pressures up until the compressor shuts off on its high-pressure switch. Outside, a fouled coil frosts faster and defrosts longer.
We clean coils, replace filters and check blower speed. If you run higher-rated filters for smoke, make sure the filter rack and blower can handle the extra resistance; a filter that is too restrictive can cause the very faults you are trying to avoid.
Wind and the outdoor unit
The same westerly gusts that drove the Marshall Fire still hit Louisville every winter. Strong wind can loosen wall brackets on ductless units, push debris into the fan and strip insulation off exposed line sets. On a windy, snowy day, coils frost quickly and defrost often. Check after a big blow for movement, rattles or a fan that scrapes, and keep the area around the unit clear of loose items that can be thrown into it.
Line-set insulation deserves a look too. Exposed foam on the suction line breaks down in sun and wind within a few years, and bare copper loses heat before it reaches the house in winter. Replacing it with UV-rated insulation and a cover is a small job that keeps the system working as designed.
Older homes: repair or replace
In Coal Creek Ranch and similar neighborhoods built between 1980 and 2000, any heat pump from the original build is long past its expected life. On those, a compressor or reversing valve failure usually points to replacement. Heat pumps added in the last decade are good repair candidates for capacitors, contactors, fan motors, defrost boards and leak repairs.
Replacements need a City of Louisville MEP permit and final inspection, which we handle. Once a house is finished and lived in, a swap qualifies for the $1,500 regional rebate and the $1,000 Colorado credit; get Xcel's post-October figures from Xcel. Rebuilds still under construction are excluded from Power Ahead. The federal 25C credit has ended. Our winter heat pump guide covers what to expect from a new system.

Heat Pump Repair FAQs — Louisville
My rebuilt home's heat pump runs on AUX a lot. Is something wrong?
Often the thermostat staging or charge was not set for winter. We check both under heating load.
Should I use a high-MERV filter for wildfire smoke?
It can help, but only if the system's airflow can handle it. We check static pressure before recommending one.
How do I check if my heat pump warranty is registered?
The brand's warranty lookup page takes the serial number; we are happy to run it for you.
Does Power Ahead apply to my rebuild?
Not while the home is under construction. Existing homes replacing equipment can qualify.
Do you work on Old Town ductless systems?
Yes, including heads, condensate pumps, communication errors and line-set repairs.
