Furnace Repair in Mead

Mead had fewer than 500 residents in 1990 and more than 6,000 by 2023, so most of its furnaces are high-efficiency units installed within the last 25 years. That changes what usually goes wrong. Instead of worn-out heat exchangers, we spend more time on condensate drains, PVC venting and sensors, plus a smaller group of 1990s and early-2000s furnaces that are reaching the end of the line.

Condensing furnaces: the drain and vent problems we see most

High-efficiency furnaces pull so much heat from the exhaust that water condenses inside them. That water runs through a trap and drain line, sometimes to a condensate pump. When the trap clogs, the drain freezes or the pump fails, a pressure switch or float switch shuts the furnace down. This is one of the most common no-heat calls in newer Mead homes.

The PVC intake and exhaust pipes cause the next largest group of problems. A horizontal run without enough slope collects water, the exhaust terminal can ice up in a cold snap, and wind-driven snow can block side-wall terminations. We check the entire vent path, not just the furnace, and make sure the terminations have proper clearance from windows, decks and grade.

Mead Climate Note

Mead sits at about 5,017 feet on the northern Colorado plains, with cold winter snaps, wind and hot, dry summer afternoons.

Sensors, ignitors and control boards

Flame sensors build up a thin coating over time, and when the furnace can no longer prove flame, it lights, runs a few seconds and shuts off, repeating until it locks out. Hot-surface ignitors crack with age. Control boards can fail after power surges or when a failing inducer or blower draws too much current.

We read the fault code history, then test each component in sequence. That way, we replace the part that actually failed and check whether something else caused it. A board that failed because an inducer motor was drawing too much current will fail again if only the board is replaced, so we measure motor amperage before signing off.

The first generation of Mead's growth

The town grew from 456 people in 1990 to 2,017 in 2000. Furnaces from those first subdivisions, if still original, are now 25 to 35 years old. At that age, heat exchanger cracks, inducer bearing failure and blower motor wear become more likely, and replacement parts can be harder to find.

We run a combustion and carbon monoxide test on every furnace call, and on these older units we also inspect the heat exchanger. If it has failed, we'll show you and explain your options.

Gas service and safety in a split-utility town

Mead's resource directory lists both Xcel Energy and Black Hills Energy for natural gas. If you smell gas or several gas appliances stop at once, call the gas utility that serves your home first. If only the furnace is affected, the problem is almost always inside the furnace, and we check inlet and manifold gas pressure during the diagnosis.

We carry the parts that fail most on Trane, Lennox, Carrier, Goodman, Bryant, Rheem and comparable furnaces. Before any work, you'll have a flat-rate quote in hand; there's no overtime surcharge, and approving the repair makes the diagnostic free.

Replacing a furnace in Mead

A failed sensor, ignitor or drain component is a repair at any age. Replacement makes sense when an older furnace has a failed heat exchanger, poor combustion numbers or several major parts failing at once. We'll give you prices for both.

The Town of Mead Building Division requires a permit to add or replace a furnace, and the same applies to water heaters, including tankless models, and new gas lines to appliances. If your water heater is the same age as the furnace, it can make sense to plan both replacements together.

Furnace Repair FAQs — Mead

My furnace lights, runs for a few seconds and shuts off. What's wrong?

A dirty flame sensor is the most common cause. A weak flame or poor ground connection can cause the same symptom. We test each before replacing parts.

Which gas company serves my home in Mead?

The Town lists both Xcel Energy and Black Hills Energy. Your gas bill shows which one serves your address.

Does Mead require a permit to replace a tankless water heater along with my furnace?

Yes. The Town of Mead requires permits for adding or replacing furnaces and water heaters, including tankless models.

How often should a newer high-efficiency furnace be serviced?

Once a year, ideally in early fall. Cleaning the flame sensor and flushing the condensate trap prevent many of the most common mid-winter shutdowns.
