Heat Pump Installation in Louisville

Louisville is in an unusual position. More than 550 homes were destroyed in the December 2021 Marshall Fire, and by August 2026, 532 had been rebuilt or were under construction. Those rebuilds, plus Old Town's mining-era houses and a large 1980–2000 suburban build-out, make for three very different heat pump conversations in Louisville.

Rebuilt homes

Rebuilt homes are new construction, with tight envelopes and modern ducts. They're usually the easiest homes to heat with a cold-climate heat pump alone. One catch: Power Ahead Colorado's $1,500 rebate is for retrofits in existing buildings, and new construction is excluded. If you're still building, ask your builder which incentives apply to new homes. If you're replacing equipment in a home that's already finished and occupied, talk to us about whether it qualifies as a retrofit.

Louisville Climate Note

Louisville sits at 5,401 ft. Wildfire smoke from the Marshall Fire and other regional fires has made advanced air filtration a must — we recommend MERV 13 or HEPA-bypass systems.

Old Town Louisville, North End, Heritage Park, Steel Ranch, Coal Creek Ranch, Coal Creek Reserve, Centennial Valley

Old Town and Coal Creek Ranch

Old Town Louisville's homes date from the coal-mining era, 1877 through the 1950s. Small rooms, plaster walls and later additions make new ductwork hard to run. Ductless heads or a slim-ducted unit for a few rooms are often the cleaner way to add heat pump heating and cooling, with the existing heat kept as backup. See our ductless guide for older homes.

Louisville's population tripled between 1980 and 2000, and the homes from that period, including surviving houses in Coal Creek Ranch, usually have a basement furnace and conventional ducts. When the AC fails, a heat pump on top of the existing furnace (dual fuel) is typically the best value.

Cold, wind and smoke

Boulder County's heating design temperature is 0°F, colder than Denver's. We size from a room-by-room Manual J at that temperature and select equipment by its published 5°F capacity, corrected for the roughly 5,400-foot elevation. The same downslope winds that drove the Marshall Fire, with gusts up to 112 mph, mean outdoor units need secure mounting and placement out of drift zones.

A heat pump runs its blower more hours than a furnace, which makes it a good time to upgrade filtration. During wildfire smoke events, a high-MERV filter in a properly sized filter rack helps, provided the ducts can handle the added resistance. We check static pressure before recommending one.

Rebates and costs

Xcel Energy supplies gas and electricity in Louisville, so Xcel heat pump rebates apply. Installers report Xcel cut them on October 1, 2026, so confirm current amounts with Xcel. Louisville is a DRCOG member, so existing homes can get Power Ahead's $1,500 with contractor pre-approval. The Colorado heat pump tax credit is $1,000 in 2026, with at least $333 off your invoice. Boulder County's EnergySmart rebates are income-qualified only (at or below 100% AMI) since January 2026. The federal 25C credit has ended.

At current prices, a 95% furnace usually costs less to run than a heat pump in cold weather. An all-electric home that drops gas service saves the fixed monthly gas charge, which helps. See heat pump vs. furnace in Colorado.

Louisville permits

The city's Building Safety division has a specific Furnace/AC/Water Heater/Heat Pump MEP permit, and every job requires a final inspection. We file the permit, coordinate electrical permitting for new circuits or a panel upgrade, and meet the inspector. Estimates are free and itemized.

Every estimate includes a written load calculation, the AHRI-matched equipment and its published 5°F capacity, the planned backup heat, and any duct, filtration or electrical work. That makes it straightforward to compare our proposal with others. Financing is available.

Heat Pump Installation FAQs — Louisville

Can my Marshall Fire rebuild get the Power Ahead rebate?

Power Ahead excludes new construction. A later replacement in an existing home is a retrofit, so check the timing and program terms with us.

Does a heat pump help with wildfire smoke?

Indirectly. Longer blower run times plus a properly sized high-MERV filter can improve filtration. We check that the ducts can handle it.

Is there a specific heat pump permit in Louisville?

Yes. The Furnace/AC/Water Heater/Heat Pump MEP permit, with a required final inspection.

What design temperature do you use?

0°F, the Boulder County value in ENERGY STAR's design-temperature guide.
