AC Installation & Replacement in Centennial
About 71 percent of Centennial's homes were built between 1970 and 1999, so most cooling installs here are second- or third-generation replacements in houses that already have ductwork. The details that matter are the ones that have changed since the last swap: refrigerant, efficiency rules, and which utility serves your address. We size each system with a Manual J and handle the city permit.
What has changed since your last AC replacement
If your current system went in 10 to 15 years ago, three things are different now. First, refrigerant: new split systems use R-454B or R-32, and a May 2026 EPA rule only allows leftover R-410A equipment built before 2025 to be installed until supplies run out. Second, efficiency: Colorado falls in DOE's North region, where the minimum is 13.4 SEER2 for a split AC and 14.3 SEER2 for a split heat pump. Third, incentives now favor heat pumps over straight air conditioning.
Because the new refrigerants run at different pressures and need A2L-rated components, the outdoor unit and the indoor coil are replaced as a matched pair. Mixing a new condenser with an old coil is not an option anymore.

Centennial Climate Note
Newer Centennial homes are well-insulated and tight — proper ventilation and humidity management are key. Heat pump retrofits work especially well.
Neighborhoods We Serve
Willow Creek, Walnut Hills, Heritage Greens, Cherry Knolls, Foxridge, Piney Creek, Hunter's Hill, Knolls West
Willow Creek, Homestead, and Walnut Hills
These established neighborhoods are full of two-story and split-level homes from the 1970s and 1980s. Their ducts were designed around a furnace, and the air conditioner was often an afterthought. Replacement is a good moment to measure static pressure and supply airflow, since an undersized return can starve even a perfectly sized new condenser.
Many homes also have older electrical panels. We confirm the breaker and wire size match the new unit's nameplate and that there is a code-compliant disconnect within sight of the condenser. Mature trees are an asset for shading but a liability for cottonwood fluff, so we pick a spot with open airflow.
Altitude and right-sizing
Centennial sits around 5,700 feet. Cooling equipment loses a bit of capacity in thinner air, with industry guidance cited by ACHR News using about a 0.92 correction at 5,000 feet. Many homes here already have more tonnage than they need, often because each replacement copied the previous one. A Manual J based on today's windows, insulation, and air sealing often lands smaller than the old unit, which means longer, quieter cycles and more even temperatures.
Xcel or CORE, and why a heat pump belongs in the quote
The city lists both Xcel Energy and CORE Electric Cooperative as providers depending on address, so check your bill before counting on any utility rebate. Xcel has offered rebates for qualifying heat pumps but not for standard central AC; its amounts changed October 1, 2026, so confirm current figures with Xcel.
Statewide, the 2026 Colorado credit for an air-source heat pump is $1,000, claimed by a registered contractor with at least $333 passed to you as an invoice discount, and Power Ahead Colorado pays $1,500 for cold-climate units filed before work starts. A heat pump can share the heating load with your furnace; our dual-fuel guide explains how.
Permits and HOA approval
A like-for-like AC replacement is a One-Stop permit from the City of Centennial Building Division. Adding cooling for the first time or changing system type may fall under a different classification, which we confirm before quoting. Many Centennial subdivisions have HOAs, so check whether a relocated or added condenser needs approval.

Air Conditioning Installation FAQs — Centennial
Can I keep my old indoor coil with a new condenser?
No. New systems use R-454B or R-32, which need a matched indoor coil. Replacing both keeps the warranty and the efficiency rating valid.
Is my Centennial home on Xcel or CORE?
It depends on the address. Your bill or the city's property search will show it, and rebate eligibility follows the utility.
Will my new AC be smaller than the old one?
Often. Many homes were oversized originally. We base the size on a Manual J, not on the old nameplate.
How long does an AC replacement take?
A typical replacement is one day, plus the city inspection afterward. A first-time install with duct changes takes longer, and we give you the schedule in writing.
Can I add a second system for my finished basement?
Often a basement needs little cooling, but if it does, a ductless head or a dedicated zone is usually cheaper than oversizing the main system. A Manual J will show the real load.
