Heat Pump Repair in Centennial
Seven in ten Centennial houses date from the last three decades of the 20th century, so their heat pumps nearly always arrived later, typically when the first AC died and the furnace stayed. That makes dual-fuel control problems the thread running through many heat pump repairs in Centennial.
Dual fuel in a 1980s Centennial house
In Homestead, Walnut Hills and Willow Creek, a typical system is a heat pump outside paired with a furnace inside that may be from the 1990s or 2000s. The two need to agree on who heats when. We often find the switchover set at a default 35 or 40°F, which hands most of the season to the furnace. On others, the setting is so low that the heat pump struggles on cold nights while backup waits.
We set the switchover based on your gas and electric rates, check the outdoor sensor and confirm that the furnace locks out the heat pump properly when it runs. Our dual-fuel guide explains the logic.

Centennial Climate Note
Newer Centennial homes are well-insulated and tight — proper ventilation and humidity management are key. Heat pump retrofits work especially well.

Xcel or CORE: why it matters
Some streets buy power from Xcel and others from CORE. Your electric rate affects what backup heat costs when the heat pump is down and what switchover point makes sense. It also affects rebates if you replace: Xcel customers should confirm Xcel's current rebate, which changed October 1, 2026, while CORE listed no heat pump rebate on its efficiency page in November 2026.
Common faults on add-on heat pumps
The reversing valve is the part that makes a heat pump a heat pump. When its solenoid coil fails, the unit cools in heating mode; sometimes the coil is the only part needed. When the valve itself sticks, it is a bigger repair. We also see capacitors, contactors, defrost boards and outdoor fan motors, especially after hot summers and hard freezes.
Older ducts can limit a heat pump's performance too. Many 1970s and 1980s systems were sized for a furnace, and a heat pump needs more airflow. High static pressure causes high head pressure in winter and coil icing in summer.
Hail, defrost and the outdoor coil
The south metro sees frequent summer hail, and flattened coil fins cut airflow. Light damage can be combed straight; heavy damage cuts capacity for good and is often an insurance claim. In winter, a coil that stays iced or a unit that blows cold air for long periods indoors points to defrost trouble. With a 4°F design temperature, defrost cycles are normal; a block of ice is not.
Placement adds to the problem in some neighborhoods. Units tucked under decks, behind lattice or between shrubs recirculate their own cold air in winter and overheat in summer. Keeping two feet of open space around the cabinet and nothing directly above the fan improves both heating and cooling. If roof runoff drips onto the unit, a short gutter extension usually stops the icing.
Repair or replace, and permits
A heat pump under ten years old with an electrical fault or a fixable leak is a repair. Past 15 years, a dead compressor or coil tips the decision toward new equipment. Like-for-like replacements in Centennial are One-Stop permits through the City Building Division, and we file them. On an existing house, a qualifying cold-climate replacement can earn the state's $1,000 credit and $1,500 from Power Ahead Colorado, which the contractor applies for before work begins. The federal 25C credit has ended.
Southglenn and Piney Creek homes that replaced their original AC with a heat pump in the last decade often still have parts coverage if the unit was registered. Look up the serial number before you approve a compressor or coil replacement; the part may cost you nothing but labor.

Heat Pump Repair FAQs — Centennial
My furnace seems to do all the heating. Is my heat pump broken?
Maybe, or the switchover is set too high. We check the unit and the setting.
How do I know if I am on Xcel or CORE?
Check your electric bill or the city's Property Search. It varies by address.
Does CORE offer a heat pump rebate?
CORE's efficiency page listed none in November 2026. Check with CORE for updates.
My heat pump blows cold in heat mode. What is wrong?
It may be defrost, which is short. If it lasts, the reversing valve or its solenoid may have failed.
Is a heat pump replacement a quick permit in Centennial?
Like-for-like replacements are One-Stop permits. We handle the filing.
