Air Conditioner Repair in Erie

Nearly all of Erie's air conditioners were installed by production builders over the past 30 years, often in large batches with the same models and installation details. That means problems in one neighborhood tend to repeat from house to house. We've learned to look for those patterns while still testing each system on its own merits.

The usual suspects in an Erie AC failure

In homes from the early 2000s, like much of Vista Ridge, the original condensers are well past 15 years old. The most frequent failure is the run capacitor, which weakens with heat and age until the compressor or fan motor won't start. Contactors pit and stick, condenser fan motors wear out, and early R-410A coils develop small leaks at brazed joints.

Homes from the 2010s and later are newer, but builder-grade systems were often installed without adjusting the refrigerant charge for the actual line-set length or measuring airflow. These systems may have worked acceptably for years while running slightly over- or undercharged, which eventually stresses the compressor.

Erie Climate Note

Erie sits at 5,072 ft on open plains east of Boulder. Strong winter winds and rapid temperature swings — sealed combustion and well-sealed ductwork are essential.

Two-story homes, one thermostat

Many Erie homes are two stories over a basement with a single thermostat in the main hallway. In summer, heat rises and the upper floor gets the most sun, so bedrooms can run noticeably warmer even with the AC working correctly. If the upstairs is hot but the system is producing a normal temperature drop at the vents, the solution is usually in duct balancing, added return air or zoning, not a bigger unit.

We'll measure the temperature split at the coil and compare upstairs and downstairs supply readings, so you know whether the problem is the equipment or the distribution. That keeps you from paying for a larger condenser that wouldn't fix a duct problem.

Our AC repair process

We start with power and controls, test the capacitor and contactor, then measure refrigerant pressures, superheat and subcooling, and indoor airflow. If we find a leak, we locate it before adding refrigerant. A clogged condensate drain is also common in basements and can trip a float switch that shuts the AC off. We clear the drain and check the trap.

You'll get a flat-rate price before work begins, with no overtime fees for evenings or weekends. The diagnostic is free when you approve the repair, and same-day appointments are available when the schedule allows.

Replacement, permits and heat pumps

If the compressor has failed or the coil leaks on a system that's 15 or more years old, replacement may make more sense than repair. The Town Building Division issues the HVAC permit and an inspector checks the work in person. The inspection covers tamper-resistant caps on refrigerant ports, insulation on the refrigerant lines, a breaker that matches the unit's rating, a disconnect within sight, a level pad, a service outlet within 25 feet, and proper sealing where the lines enter the house.

If you're replacing, consider a heat pump. It cools like an AC and can also share winter heating with your furnace. Boulder County's Switch Together heat pump group-buy has been open to every resident in town, including those in Weld County, and you can combine it with utility rebates. The town's materials list Xcel Energy and United Power as electric providers, so check which serves your address.

Air Conditioner Repair FAQs — Erie

My Erie AC hums but the outdoor fan won't spin. What's likely wrong?

A failed run capacitor is the most common cause, especially on condensers more than 10 years old. Turn the system off to protect the compressor and call us.

What does the town inspect when an AC is replaced?

The town's in-person inspection checks refrigerant port caps, line-set insulation, breaker sizing, a disconnect in sight, a level base, a nearby service outlet and sealing where the lines enter the house.

Can Weld County residents of Erie use Boulder County heat pump programs?

Boulder County's Switch Together heat pump group-buy has been open to all town residents, including those on the Weld County side. Check the program's current dates and terms.

Why is my AC shutting off with water near the furnace?

The condensate drain is probably clogged, and a safety float switch has turned off the system. We clear the line, check the trap and look for the cause.
