Air Conditioner Repair in Boulder
Many Boulder homes were built without air conditioning, so central air here is often a later addition squeezed into ducts designed only for heat. Summer highs average around 88°F, and heat pumps that heat and cool are increasingly common. We repair conventional AC and heat pumps and explain clearly whether the problem is the equipment or the house it's in.
Why retrofit AC struggles in Boulder homes
Cooling needs more airflow than heating, and ducts in pre-war homes or 1950s ranches were rarely sized for it. When an evaporator coil is added on top of an old furnace with small ducts, airflow drops, the coil gets too cold and ice forms. The common result is a system that runs nonstop, freezes in the afternoon and leaks water when it thaws.
Popped-top homes in neighborhoods like Martin Acres have their own problem: the new second floor gets the most sun and the least return air. Upstairs bedrooms can stay several degrees warmer than the main floor even when the equipment is working correctly. We measure temperatures room by room and static pressure before calling it an equipment failure.

Boulder Climate Note
At 5,319 ft and against the foothills, Boulder runs ~3-5°F colder in winter than Denver and gets intense solar gain on south-facing slopes. Heat pumps perform exceptionally well here.

Heat pumps need a different kind of repair
Boulder's push toward electrification means more homes now have air-source heat pumps or ducted heat pumps added to an existing furnace. These systems use reversing valves, electronic expansion valves, defrost controls and variable-speed inverter boards that an ordinary AC doesn't have. A heat pump that cools poorly may have a stuck reversing valve or a sensor fault rather than a refrigerant problem.
Because a heat pump runs most of the year, small issues like a weak outdoor fan motor or a failing defrost sensor wear the system much faster than a cooling-only unit. Catching them during a summer repair call can prevent a winter breakdown.
Smoke season, filters and airflow
Wildfire smoke has become a regular part of Front Range summers, and many homeowners respond by installing high-MERV filters. That's good for air quality, but a dense filter in a return that was already undersized can reduce airflow enough to freeze the coil or overheat the blower motor. Filters also clog much faster during smoky weeks.
If your AC started icing up or blowing weakly after a filter upgrade, we can measure the pressure drop and recommend a filter size or cabinet setup that cleans the air without choking the system.
How we diagnose AC and heat pump problems
We check power, controls, the capacitor and contactor, then measure refrigerant pressures, superheat and subcooling, indoor airflow and temperature split. For inverter heat pumps we read the board's fault history before replacing parts. If there's a refrigerant leak, we look for it rather than topping off the charge and leaving.
Pricing is flat-rate and given before work starts, with no overtime fees, and the diagnostic is free when you approve the repair. Our trucks carry common parts for Trane, Lennox, Carrier, Goodman, Bryant, Rheem and other major brands.
Repair now or switch to a heat pump?
A capacitor, contactor, fan motor or drain problem is worth fixing on almost any system. If an older straight AC has a failed compressor or a leaking coil, local rules make replacement worth considering. The city has steered its rebates toward heat pumps, and Boulder County has run a group-buy program called Switch Together for heat pumps. Replacements require a mechanical permit from Planning & Development Services and must follow the 2024 city energy code. Xcel Energy is the electric utility, so check its current heat pump rebates as well.

Air Conditioner Repair FAQs — Boulder
My older Boulder house has a newer AC that still can't keep up. What's wrong?
The ductwork is usually the limiting factor. Homes built before central air often have ducts too small for cooling airflow. We measure static pressure and airflow to show whether the equipment or the ductwork is the bottleneck.
Do you repair heat pumps and mini-splits?
Yes. We diagnose ducted heat pumps, add-on heat pumps paired with gas furnaces, and ductless systems, including reversing valves, defrost controls and inverter boards.
Will a MERV 13 filter hurt my AC during smoke season?
It can if your return air is undersized. A thicker media cabinet with more surface area often solves this. We can measure the filter's pressure drop to check.
Are there rebates if I replace my AC with a heat pump?
City programs favor heat pumps over straight AC. In 2026 EnergySmart rebates are limited to income-qualified households, but Xcel Energy, state tax credits and county group-buy programs may help. Check current terms before you buy.
