Heat Pump Installation in Erie
Erie grew from about 1,260 residents in 1990 to more than 30,000 in 2020, so most homes here are less than 30 years old. That makes it one of the better towns in the metro for a whole-home cold-climate heat pump, as long as it's sized for the colder design temperature that Boulder and Weld counties share.
Sizing for a 0°F design day
The town straddles Weld County, where about 58% of residents live, and Boulder County. ENERGY STAR's design-temperature guide lists both at 0°F, a few degrees colder than Denver. At about 5,070 feet, altitude trims capacity a little less than in higher towns, but it still counts. We run a room-by-room Manual J at 0°F, choose a unit by its published output at 5°F, and set the balance point where backup heat begins.
The open eastern edge of town gets wind and drifting snow. We mount outdoor units on raised stands, away from drift lines and roof valleys, so the coil stays clear and defrost meltwater drains.

Erie Climate Note
Erie sits at 5,072 ft on open plains east of Boulder. Strong winter winds and rapid temperature swings — sealed combustion and well-sealed ductwork are essential.

Newer homes, simpler installs
Vista Ridge's median home was built around 2005, and much of the town looks similar. Those homes usually have tight construction, 200-amp service and ducts designed for central air. The first-generation furnace and AC are now roughly 15 to 20 years old, often both at once. That's when going all-electric makes the most sense: a cold-climate heat pump with a variable-speed air handler and right-sized backup strips replaces both.
If the furnace was replaced more recently, we can keep it and add a heat pump in place of the AC. That's dual fuel, with the furnace covering only the coldest hours. Two-story homes in newer subdivisions often have warm upstairs bedrooms, and a variable-speed system with a properly sized return helps.
Old Town Erie, along Briggs Street, has a small number of older homes. Ductless units are often the easiest way to add a heat pump there.
Utilities and incentives
Xcel Energy is Erie's main gas and electric provider. The town's economic development brochure also lists Black Hills Energy for gas and United Power for electricity in parts of town, so check your bill. For Xcel customers, Xcel's heat pump rebates apply. Installers report the cold-climate rebate for gas customers dropped to about $1,500 per heating ton on October 1, 2026, so confirm the current amount with Xcel. United Power has its own member program, and its 2026 amounts should be confirmed with the co-op.
Erie is a DRCOG member, so Power Ahead Colorado's $1,500 applies to existing homes when the contractor gets pre-approval before work starts. The state heat pump tax credit adds at least $333 off your invoice. Boulder County residents with incomes at or below 100% of area median income may also qualify for EnergySmart help. The federal 25C credit ended after 2025. For how these stack, see our rebate guide.
What it costs to run
Gas from a 95% furnace is usually cheaper per unit of heat than a heat pump at current Colorado prices. In an all-electric conversion, you avoid Xcel's fixed monthly gas charge if nothing else in the house burns gas, which narrows the gap. A dual-fuel switchover set by your actual rates is the low-risk middle ground.
For budgeting, Power Ahead Colorado's regional cost summary puts a cold-climate whole-home system at about $12,000–$16,000 for 2 tons and $24,000–$30,000 for 4 tons, before incentives and excluding panel or duct work. Those are market ranges, not our prices. Your estimate is free, itemized and specific to your house.
Permit and inspection
The Town of Erie's Building Division issues residential HVAC permits through eTRAKiT and now requires in-person inspections. Video inspections are no longer accepted. We file the permit, handle electrical permitting for any new circuit and meet the inspector on site.

Heat Pump Installation FAQs — Erie
Is my Vista Ridge home a good fit for an all-electric heat pump?
Often. Newer, tighter homes with 200-amp service and good ducts are strong candidates, especially when the furnace and AC are both aging.
Why size for 0°F in Erie?
ENERGY STAR's design data puts both Weld and Boulder counties at 0°F, colder than Denver's 3°F.
Which utility serves my Erie home?
Mostly Xcel Energy, though the town lists Black Hills (gas) and United Power (electric) for some areas. Your bill decides which rebates apply.
Does Erie still allow video inspections?
No. The town requires in-person HVAC inspections. We schedule and attend them.
