Air Conditioner Repair in Firestone
Because so much of Firestone was built between 2000 and 2010, many air conditioners in town straddle an important line: the industry's switch from R-22 to R-410A refrigerant. Whether your system is on the older side of that change or a newer one in a neighborhood like Barefoot Lakes affects what a repair costs and whether it's worth doing. We check that first.
R-22 or R-410A? Why it matters in Firestone
New air conditioners built for R-22 stopped being made in 2010, and R-22 itself is no longer produced, so the remaining supply is limited and expensive. Homes from the first half of the 2000s boom, including some in established neighborhoods like Saddleback, St. Vrain Ranch and Oak Meadows, may still have original R-22 condensers if the outdoor unit has never been replaced. Homes built toward 2010 and later typically have R-410A.
On an R-22 system, electrical repairs such as a capacitor or contactor are still worthwhile. A significant refrigerant leak or a failed compressor usually isn't, since the system is old and the refrigerant is costly. The refrigerant type is printed on the outdoor unit's rating plate.

Firestone Climate Note
At about 4,856 feet on the plains of southwestern Weld County, Firestone has cold, windy winter spells and hot summer afternoons that test aging AC systems.

What wears out at 15 to 20 years
Condensers from the boom years are now 15 to 20 years old. The run capacitor is the most common failure, followed by contactors, condenser fan motors and small leaks at brazed joints or service valves. Indoor coils can develop pinhole leaks as well, and a coil leak often shows up first as a system that runs longer each summer before it finally stops cooling.
We test the capacitor and amp draw on every visit and replace weak parts before they take out the compressor. If we find a leak, we locate it before adding refrigerant, so you understand the actual condition of the system.
Upstairs heat in two-story production homes
Many Firestone homes are two stories over a basement with a single thermostat on the main floor. In summer, the upper floor runs warmer, especially on the side facing the afternoon sun. If the AC produces a normal temperature drop but the bedrooms are still warm, the problem is usually duct design or return air, not the size of the unit.
We measure supply temperatures and airflow on each floor before recommending anything, so you don't pay for a bigger unit that won't fix a distribution problem. Simple steps like keeping bedroom doors open, closing blinds on west-facing windows and running the furnace fan continuously on hot evenings can also even out temperatures between floors.
Our diagnostic process
We check the thermostat, breaker and disconnect, test the capacitor, contactor and fan motor, measure refrigerant pressures, superheat and subcooling, and check indoor airflow and the condensate drain. Then we explain what we found in plain terms.
Every repair has a flat-rate price you approve first, with no overtime fees. The diagnostic is free when you go ahead with the repair, and same-day appointments are available when the schedule allows.
Replacing an AC in Firestone
If you replace, the Town of Firestone Building Division issues the permit. Its fee schedule covers AC and furnace replacement under one residential permit, while installing AC where none existed before adds an electrical fee. If your furnace is the same age, replacing both at once can simplify the project.
Builder information for Barefoot Lakes lists United Power as the electric provider. Check with your electric utility for current AC or heat pump rebates before choosing equipment, and ask us about a heat pump if you'd like to compare options.

Air Conditioner Repair FAQs — Firestone
How can I tell if my Firestone AC uses R-22?
Look at the rating plate on the outdoor unit. If it lists R-22 or HCFC-22, it's an older system. Most units installed after 2010 use R-410A or a newer refrigerant.
Is it worth fixing a refrigerant leak on an R-22 system?
Usually not for a large leak, because R-22 is no longer produced and the system is likely 15 years or older. Small electrical repairs are still worthwhile.
Why is my upstairs so much warmer than downstairs in summer?
Heat rises and the upper floor gets the most sun. In many production homes, limited return air upstairs makes it worse. We measure airflow to find the fix.
Does adding AC to a home without it need a different permit in Firestone?
The Town's fee schedule treats a new AC differently from a replacement, adding an electrical fee. We handle the permit when we do the installation.
