Air Conditioner Repair in Longmont
Longmont summers average about 91°F in July and have reached 106°F, and the city's own electric utility shapes how residents repair and replace cooling equipment. Whether you have a decades-old condenser behind a West Side bungalow or a heat pump in a newer home, we'll find out why it's not cooling and fix it.
Common AC problems across the city's housing
Homes in the historic districts weren't built for central air, so AC was added later with ducts designed for heat only, or with high-wall ductless units. Ducted systems in these houses often have too little return air, which leads to frozen coils, weak airflow and long run times on hot afternoons.
In subdivisions from the 1990s and 2000s, many condensers are original or on their first replacement. We regularly see weak capacitors, failed contactors, worn fan motors and slow refrigerant leaks in evaporator coils. Older units that still use R-22 are expensive to recharge because that refrigerant is no longer produced.
The city extends east into Weld County and is still bordered by agricultural land, so cottonwood fluff, field dust and grass clippings coat condenser coils over the summer. A dirty coil raises head pressure and compressor temperature, so a system that cooled fine in June may struggle in August. Rinsing the coil gently from the inside out each spring helps, and we clean it as part of the repair when it's needed.

How we diagnose a cooling problem
We check the thermostat and power first, then test the capacitor and contactor and measure refrigerant pressures, superheat, subcooling and indoor airflow. We compare the temperature drop across the coil with what the system should produce. If refrigerant is low, we find the leak before deciding what to do.
For heat pumps, we also check the reversing valve, defrost controls and sensors, and read the inverter fault history on variable-speed models. Pricing is flat-rate and given before work begins, with no overtime fees, and the diagnostic is free when you go ahead with the repair.
LPC, Efficiency Works and the replacement decision
Because electricity here comes from city-owned Longmont Power & Communications rather than Xcel, residents' cooling rebates go through Efficiency Works. Its HVAC incentives focus on air-source heat pumps, ductless mini-splits and ground-source systems. There's no standalone central AC rebate, so if your old AC needs replacing, a heat pump may be the only option that qualifies.
Efficiency Works has required the home to be at least a year old, the work to be done by one of its listed service providers, and the application to be submitted within 45 days of purchase. Equipment has to meet minimum efficiency ratings. Rebate amounts and rules change, so confirm them before you sign anything. City residents, including those in Weld County, have also been eligible for Boulder County's Switch Together heat pump group-buy.
Any AC replacement also needs a permit from the City of Longmont's Building Services, which lists air conditioners among the appliances that require one.
When repairing makes sense
Electrical parts, fan motors and drain problems are worth repairing on almost any system. If an older R-22 unit has a compressor failure or a leaking coil, we'll explain what a repair would involve compared with replacement, including the heat pump rebate path through LPC, so you can make an informed choice.

Air Conditioner Repair FAQs — Longmont
Why aren't AC rebates here handled by Xcel?
Electricity comes from the city-owned Longmont Power & Communications. Its residential rebates are offered through Efficiency Works, which also serves Fort Collins, Loveland and Estes Park utility customers.
Is there an Efficiency Works rebate for a new central AC?
Efficiency Works' HVAC incentives focus on heat pumps rather than standalone central AC. A qualifying heat pump can provide the same cooling and may be eligible. Check current rules before buying.
Do I need a permit to replace an air conditioner?
Yes. The City of Longmont lists air conditioners among the appliances that require a building permit. Contact Building Services at the Development Services Center if you have questions.
Can you add AC to an older West Side home without ducts?
Often the most practical option is a ductless mini-split. Where ducts already exist, we check whether they can handle cooling airflow before recommending a ducted system.
