Air Conditioner Repair in Lyons

Central air is a later addition in many Lyons homes, and the town's mix of thick-walled historic buildings, 1990s houses and foothill properties means no two cooling setups are alike. Because Lyons runs its own electric utility with local efficiency rebates, more homeowners are also looking at heat pumps. We repair conventional AC and heat pumps and explain your options clearly.

Cooling older and historic homes

The sandstone buildings near downtown Lyons date from the 1870s to 1917 and were never designed for ductwork. Where central air was added, ducts often run through tight chases or attic spaces with limited room, and returns are small. Low airflow leads to frozen coils, long run times and upstairs rooms that stay warm.

Ductless mini-splits are often a better fit in older homes for this reason. They have their own service needs: clogged filters, dirty indoor coils and condensate pumps that fail. We service both ducted and ductless systems.

Lyons Climate Note

At about 5,341 feet at the mouth of the foothills, Lyons gets cold canyon-edge winter nights and warm summer days, and many areas of town lie in the mapped floodplain.

Neighborhoods We Serve

Downtown Lyons historic district, Steamboat Valley, outlying foothill properties

Outdoor units, flood zones and foothill exposure

Many areas of town lie in the mapped floodplain. If your condenser was raised onto a platform or wall bracket, or relocated during flood repairs, it needs secure mounting, protected wiring and a refrigerant line set that wasn't kinked or stressed in the move.

Homes on the foothill edges of town deal with cottonwood fluff, pine debris and the occasional animal nest in the unit. We clean coils, clear debris and check the wiring and line set while we're there.

Heat pumps and the Lyons electric utility

Lyons operates its own municipal electric utility and buys power through the Municipal Energy Agency of Nebraska. The town lists local rebates for efficiency upgrades, and it has been a partner in Boulder County's Switch Together heat pump program. As a result, some homes in town now cool and partly heat with a heat pump instead of a standard AC.

Heat pumps fail in some of the same ways as AC, with weak capacitors and contactors, but they also have reversing valves, defrost controls and outdoor sensors. We test each mode so you know the system will work in both seasons.

What to check before calling

Start with the simple things: thermostat set to cool and a few degrees below room temperature, a clean filter, the breaker and the outdoor disconnect switched on. On a mini-split, check the remote's mode and batteries and clean the washable filters behind the front panel. On a heat pump, make sure the thermostat isn't set to emergency heat or heat mode.

If the outdoor unit is buzzing but the fan isn't turning, or the indoor coil is visibly iced over, turn the system off and call. Running it in that condition can damage the compressor, which turns a small repair into a large one.

How we diagnose cooling problems

We check the thermostat and power, then test the capacitor, contactor and fan motor. We measure refrigerant pressures, superheat and subcooling, and indoor airflow, and inspect the condensate drain. Leaks are located before any refrigerant is added.

Pricing is flat-rate and approved before we start, with no overtime fees, and the diagnostic is free with the repair. Same-day appointments open up most days.

Repair, replacement and permits

A failed capacitor, contactor or fan motor is a straightforward repair. A failed compressor or leaking coil on a 15-year-old system, especially one using R-22, is usually where replacement starts to make sense. If you're replacing, it's worth comparing a heat pump with a standard AC given the town's rebates.

Replacement work is permitted through the Town's building department, which is run by SAFEbuilt, and requires a Town contractor license. Equipment in the floodplain may also need a floodplain development permit.

Air Conditioner Repair FAQs — Lyons

Can central air be added to a historic home?

Often, but duct space is limited in older stone buildings. Ductless mini-splits or small-duct systems are frequently the more practical choice. We'll look at the house and explain the options.

My condenser was raised after the 2013 flood. Does that affect it?

It can if the mounting, wiring or line set was stressed during the move. We check those connections along with the normal electrical and refrigerant tests.

Does Lyons offer rebates for heat pumps?

The Town's electric utility lists local efficiency rebates, and Lyons has partnered with Boulder County's Switch Together heat pump program. Check current program details before you buy.

Do you service ductless mini-splits?

Yes. We clean indoor coils and filters, test condensate pumps and check refrigerant and electrical components on ductless systems.
