Heat Pump Repair in Erie

Thirty years ago Erie was a small town of roughly 1,300; today it tops 30,000, which means the typical house went up after the mid-1990s. That makes heat pump repair in Erie mostly about two groups: original 2000s systems reaching the end of their run, and newer heat pumps that owners added when their first AC died.

The 20-year mark in Vista Ridge

A typical Vista Ridge house dates to the middle of the 2000s. Heat pumps and AC condensers from that era are now in their late teens, and the repairs start stacking up: compressors that draw high amps on startup, outdoor fan motors with worn bearings, coils with pinhole leaks. A unit that needs a hard-start kit this year and a refrigerant leak repair next year is telling you something.

Our rough rule is simple. If the repair costs more than a third of a replacement and the unit is past 15 years, we show you both prices and let you decide. We never push replacement on a system that is fundamentally sound.

Erie Climate Note

Erie sits at 5,072 ft on open plains east of Boulder. Strong winter winds and rapid temperature swings — sealed combustion and well-sealed ductwork are essential.

Heat pumps added in place of the old AC

Many Erie homeowners replaced a failing original AC with a heat pump and kept the gas furnace. These dual-fuel systems are reliable, but the control setup matters. We regularly find the switchover temperature left at a default that leaves the furnace doing most of the work, or set so low that the heat pump struggles while backup waits. On some, the O/B wire for the reversing valve was landed wrong and the unit heats in cooling mode and cools in heating mode.

Our dual-fuel article explains how to think about that switchover point on Colorado gas and electric rates.

Reversing valve and defrost faults

A reversing valve stuck partway causes lukewarm air in both modes and often a hissing sound at the outdoor unit. A stuck defrost cycle shows up as a unit blowing cold air indoors for 15 minutes or more, or a coil that never clears. The town's open ground on both the Weld and Boulder County sides means wind-blown snow and fast frosting, so defrost controls work hard here. We test the solenoid, valve, sensor and board separately so you replace only what failed.

Which utility serves you matters

Most Erie homes buy power from Xcel Energy, but the Town lists United Power for some areas, and gas may be Xcel or Black Hills depending on the address. That affects two things: what backup heat costs you when the heat pump is down, and which rebates apply if you replace. Check your bills before you compare quotes.

Backup heat is where this shows up most. A heat pump with electric strips that fails on an Xcel or United Power account can double a winter electric bill. One paired with a gas furnace fails more quietly, pushing more load onto the gas meter. Either way, a sudden jump compared with the same month last year is the best early warning you have, often weeks before the house feels cold.

Warranty, permits and replacement incentives

For heat pumps installed in the last ten years, check registration before paying for a major part. Many manufacturers extend parts coverage only when the unit was registered soon after installation.

Replacements need a Town of Erie residential HVAC permit through eTRAKiT, and inspections are now in person. For an occupied house, Power Ahead adds $1,500 and the state credit adds $1,000. Confirm Xcel's revised amounts before signing. The federal 25C credit has ended.

Heat Pump Repair FAQs — Erie

My 2005 Erie heat pump needs a compressor. Repair or replace?

At that age, replacement usually makes more sense. We give you both prices in writing.

My heat pump blows cold air in heating mode. Why?

It may be in defrost, which is short and normal. If it lasts, the reversing valve or its wiring may be at fault.

Can you fix a dual-fuel setup where the furnace runs all the time?

Yes. The switchover setting or the outdoor sensor is usually the cause.

Do Erie inspections still accept video?

No, the Town now requires in-person inspections. We schedule them on replacements.

Does United Power offer heat pump rebates in Erie?

Ask United Power directly; amounts change. Xcel customers should confirm Xcel's current rebate.
