AC Installation & Replacement in Littleton
Littleton grew from about 3,400 residents in 1950 to more than 26,000 by 1970, and the postwar subdivisions from that boom still shape how cooling gets installed here. Many of those homes never had central air. We install central AC, heat pumps, and ductless systems across the city, and because many addresses that say Littleton are not in the city at all, we start by confirming which permit office applies.
City, county, or neither: who issues your permit
Inside city limits, the City of Littleton Building Division and Permit Center requires permits for furnaces, AC equipment, and ductwork. But Ken Caryl, Columbine, Roxborough Park, and parts of Highlands Ranch use Littleton mailing addresses and fall under their county instead. That changes the application, the inspection, and sometimes the rules.
We check your parcel before quoting so the right permit is pulled and the inspection is scheduled with the right office. It is a small step that prevents a delay on install day.

Littleton Climate Note
Littleton sees more wildfire smoke days than north metro — air purification systems are popular here. Foothill exposure means more wind, less humidity.
Neighborhoods We Serve
Downtown Littleton, Roxborough, Ken Caryl, Chatfield, Columbine, Bowles, South Park, Broadmoor, Woodlawn, Arapaho Hills
Rangeview, Broadmoor, and Woodlawn ranches
Postwar subdivisions such as Rangeview (1953), Broadmoor, Woodlawn, Ridgewood (1960), and Aberdeen Village are mostly modest ranches with basement or closet furnaces. Adding central air means a coil on the furnace, more return air than the house was built with, and a dedicated 240-volt circuit outdoors. Many of these homes still have their original electrical service, so we check panel capacity during the estimate.
If the furnace is 20 years old or older, pairing the new AC with a new furnace or a heat pump avoids mismatched equipment and a second visit.
Arapaho Hills and mid-century modern homes
Arapaho Hills is on the National Register as a mid-century modern neighborhood. Low-slope roofs, walls of glass, and open plans make these homes look great and hard to cool, because there is often little attic or basement space for ductwork. A ductless heat pump with carefully placed indoor units is often the cleanest answer, and it preserves the architecture. Our mini-split guide covers the options.
Swamp cooler or central air
Littleton's dry air makes evaporative cooling practical, and Xcel Energy has offered rebates on qualifying evaporative coolers. A swamp cooler costs less to run than central air but needs open windows, seasonal maintenance, and loses ground on humid late-summer days. Converting means sealing the cooler opening and adding return air. Some homeowners keep both, using the cooler in early summer and central air in the hottest weeks. If you do, the cooler's opening should be dampered and sealed when it is off, or the new AC will lose conditioned air through it.
The 1970s to 1990s homes that make up about half of Littleton's housing are a different job: most have central air already, and the replacement is a matter of sizing correctly and checking the ducts. A single return for a two-story house is common, and adding return air upstairs often fixes more than a bigger condenser would.
Sizing, refrigerant, and heat pumps
At about 5,400 feet, cooling capacity is slightly lower than sea-level ratings; ACHR News, citing industry practice, puts the dry-coil correction near 0.92 at 5,000 feet. We size with a Manual J. New split systems use R-454B or R-32 with a matched indoor coil, and DOE's North region minimum is 13.4 SEER2 for a split AC and 14.3 SEER2 for a split heat pump.
Xcel supplies gas and electricity inside the city and has offered heat pump rebates, not standard AC rebates; amounts changed October 1, 2026, so confirm them. Two incentives are firm for 2026: a $1,000 Colorado tax credit on air-source heat pumps, which the installing contractor claims and shares with you as at least a $333 invoice discount, and a $1,500 Power Ahead Colorado rebate on cold-climate units that has to be filed before installation.

Air Conditioning Installation FAQs — Littleton
My address says Littleton. Does the city issue my permit?
Not always. Ken Caryl, Columbine, Roxborough Park, and other unincorporated areas fall under their county. We confirm before applying.
Can a mid-century modern home get central air?
Often not with conventional ducts. Ductless heat pumps cool and heat without altering the architecture.
Is a swamp cooler still a good option?
In Littleton's dry climate, yes for many homes, and Xcel has offered rebates on qualifying evaporative coolers.
Does the city require a permit for ductwork changes?
Yes. Littleton requires permits for furnaces, AC equipment, and ductwork. We include duct changes in the permit.
