Heat Pump Installation in Littleton

Littleton grew from about 3,400 people in 1950 to more than 26,000 by 1970, so much of the city's housing is postwar subdivisions like Rangeview, Broadmoor, Woodlawn and Ridgewood. Those homes, plus a cold January where nights average about 15°F, shape the right heat pump for a Littleton house.

Cold nights and realistic sizing

Average January lows are about 15°F, and the city's record is 29 below. The Arapahoe County design temperature used for Manual J is about 4°F. A modern cold-climate heat pump keeps heating well below that, but its capacity drops as it gets colder. We pick equipment by its published output at 5°F, correct for the city's roughly 5,400-foot elevation, and plan backup heat for the rare nights below the design point.

Homes near the South Platte and in low spots can run colder than the official station. We take that into account when choosing the outdoor unit's location and the balance point.

Littleton Climate Note

Littleton sees more wildfire smoke days than north metro — air purification systems are popular here. Foothill exposure means more wind, less humidity.

Postwar subdivisions and mid-century modern

Rangeview (1953), Broadmoor, Woodlawn and Ridgewood (1960) are mostly modest single-story homes with basement furnaces. When the AC fails, a heat pump that sits on top of the existing furnace (dual fuel) is usually the right move. We check whether the old ducts can carry heat pump airflow, and adding a return often solves the problem when they can't.

Arapaho Hills, listed on the National Register, is a mid-century modern neighborhood where open plans and large windows change the load calculation. A ductless system can avoid changes to original architectural features, and a room-by-room Manual J matters more than usual with that much glass. Our ductless guide covers the layout options.

Electrical capacity

Many homes from the 1950s and 1960s have 100-amp service or less. A heat pump needs its own 240-volt circuit, and electric backup strips can need another 40 amps or more. Dual fuel avoids the strip-heat circuit. If you want all-electric, a panel upgrade may be part of the job. HomeGuide's national range for a 100-to-200-amp upgrade is $1,300–$1,600, and a licensed electrician does it under a separate permit.

Rebates and operating cost

Xcel Energy provides gas and electricity in Littleton, so Xcel heat pump rebates apply. Installers report the cold-climate rebate for gas customers fell to about $1,500 per heating ton on October 1, 2026, so confirm with Xcel before you sign. The city is a DRCOG member, so Power Ahead Colorado's $1,500 applies to existing homes with contractor pre-approval. The Colorado heat pump tax credit adds at least $333 off your invoice in 2026. The city's sustainability office also lists residential programs worth checking. The federal 25C credit has ended.

Running cost is where honesty matters. At current prices, a 95% gas furnace usually heats more cheaply than a heat pump in cold weather. The heat pump earns its keep by replacing the AC, heating efficiently in mild weather and cutting gas use. See heat pump vs. furnace in Colorado.

Littleton or county permit?

Inside city limits, the Building Division's Permit Center requires permits for furnaces, AC equipment and ductwork, so heat pump installs are permitted and inspected. Many Littleton mailing addresses, including Ken Caryl, Columbine, Highlands Ranch and Roxborough Park, are unincorporated and go through their county instead. We confirm jurisdiction, file the right permit, coordinate electrical work and schedule the inspection.

Estimates are free and itemized, with upfront written pricing. Financing is available.

Heat Pump Installation FAQs — Littleton

How cold does a Littleton heat pump need to handle?

January lows average about 15°F, and the design temperature is about 4°F. Cold-climate units work below that, with backup heat for extremes.

I live in Ken Caryl with a Littleton address. Who issues my permit?

Jefferson County, not the City of Littleton. We confirm jurisdiction before filing.

Is a heat pump right for my Rangeview or Broadmoor house?

Often as dual fuel, replacing the AC and keeping the furnace for backup. We check ducts and the panel first.

What incentives can I claim?

Xcel rebates (confirm amounts), Power Ahead's $1,500, and the state credit's minimum $333 discount. The federal credit ended after 2025.
