Heat Pump Repair in Sheridan
About a quarter of houses in Sheridan are heated with electricity, a high share for the Denver area. Some of those homes run on heat pumps, and others still rely on baseboard or resistance furnaces that a heat pump could replace. Either way, keeping a heat pump working here matters directly to the electric bill.
Why a failing heat pump shows up on the bill first
A heat pump moves heat instead of making it, so it uses far less electricity than resistance heat for the same warmth. When the compressor or outdoor fan stops doing its share, the backup strips take over. The house stays warm, so many people don't notice anything is wrong until the bill arrives.
Watch the thermostat. If it shows auxiliary heat for long stretches on mild days, or you see emergency heat selected, something needs attention. A quick look at the outdoor unit helps too: if it isn't running while the thermostat calls for heat, the backup is doing all the work.

Sheridan Climate Note
At about 5,286 feet along Bear Creek and the South Platte, Sheridan gets the metro's cold snaps and summer hail. Gas furnaces need altitude setup, and electric heat runs hard during long cold spells.

Manufactured homes and package units
Roughly 200 of the city's homes are mobile or manufactured. Bear Creek Village and Ridgeline at River Run, both age-restricted communities, account for many of them. Many manufactured homes use a package heat pump, a single cabinet outside with the compressor, coils and blower together, connected to ducts under the floor.
Package units have their own set of problems. Crossover ducts under the home can come loose or get crushed, so warm air heats the crawlspace instead of the living room. Skirting that blocks air or traps snow around the unit causes heavy frost. The cabinet also holds the blower motor and its capacitor, which fail like any other. We inspect the duct connections under the home when heat is weak, not just the equipment.
Community rules may limit where a replacement unit can sit or how it's mounted, so check with management before planning a replacement.
Winter faults on mid-century ranches
Sheridan's median house was built in 1969, and most are single-story ranches, bungalows and cottages on good-sized lots. Where these homes have a ducted heat pump, it usually replaced an old AC and works alongside a furnace. Common winter calls are ice that won't clear, cold air from vents and units that short cycle.
Ice that encases the coil usually means a defrost control fault, a failed outdoor fan or low refrigerant. Cold air in heat mode points to the reversing valve. Short cycling is often a thermostat wired for the wrong equipment type, especially after a homeowner replaced it.
Capacitors, contactors and hail
Outdoor units fail most often at simple electrical parts. A bulging capacitor or a pitted contactor can keep the compressor from starting, and both are inexpensive to replace if caught early. Left alone, a weak capacitor makes the compressor and fan motor work harder on every start, and that is how a small repair becomes a large one. If you hear the outdoor unit hum or click without the fan turning, shut it off at the thermostat and call rather than letting it keep trying. Hail is the other big outdoor risk on the Front Range; check fins after any storm and call if the coil looks flattened.
Repair or replace, and getting it permitted
If your heat pump is old and the compressor or valve has failed, replacement often costs less over time than a major repair, especially in a home that otherwise runs on electric resistance heat. The City of Sheridan Building Department handles permits and requires contractors to be licensed or registered with the city.
Power Ahead Colorado pays $1,500 toward a cold-climate heat pump in existing homes, and the state credit delivers at least $333 on the invoice. Xcel rebate amounts changed in October 2026, so confirm current numbers with Xcel. Our winter performance guide explains what a modern cold-climate unit can handle.

Heat Pump Repair FAQs — Sheridan
Why did my electric bill double this winter?
If you have a heat pump, the backup strips may be doing all the heating because the heat pump stopped. Check that the outdoor unit runs when heat is called.
Do you repair heat pumps in manufactured homes?
Yes, including package units. We also check the under-floor ducts and crossovers, which are a common source of weak heat.
Is emergency heat bad to use?
It works, but it costs much more to run. Use it only when the heat pump is broken, and call for repair.
Does Sheridan require a licensed contractor?
Yes. Contractors must be licensed or registered with the City of Sheridan.
