Heat Pump Installation in Sheridan
About a quarter of Sheridan houses heat with electricity rather than gas, according to city-data housing figures. That's unusual for the metro, and it's exactly where heat pumps pay off fastest. Sheridan's stock of 1960s ranches, small cottages and roughly 200 mobile homes each needs a slightly different approach.
Replacing electric heat is the big win
Electric baseboards, wall heaters and electric furnaces turn one unit of electricity into one unit of heat. A heat pump moves heat from outdoor air instead. In the DOE Cold Climate Heat Pump Challenge field study, compressor-only efficiency ranged from about 1.8 times resistance heat at -15°F to about 3.5 times at 45–55°F. Most winter hours along the South Platte are well above zero, so an all-electric house switching to a cold-climate heat pump typically uses much less electricity for heat. It also gains efficient air conditioning from the same system.
There's one honest caveat. Electric strip heat inside an air handler is still resistance heat, so the savings depend on how often it runs. We set an outdoor-temperature lockout during commissioning so the strips only come on when the heat pump truly can't keep up, not every time someone nudges the thermostat up two degrees.

Sheridan Climate Note
At about 5,286 feet along Bear Creek and the South Platte, Sheridan gets the metro's cold snaps and summer hail. Gas furnaces need altitude setup, and electric heat runs hard during long cold spells.

Mid-century ranches and cottages
The median Sheridan house was built in 1969. Gas-heated ranches from that era usually have a basement or closet furnace with short duct runs that a ducted heat pump can reuse once we check airflow. Electrically heated homes often have no ducts at all, so a ductless mini-split with one head per main living area is usually simpler. Our mini-split guide shows typical layouts.
Many older homes still have 100-amp service. A heat pump needs its own 240-volt circuit, but replacing baseboards can free up capacity those circuits were using. We map the panel during the estimate so you know whether an upgrade is needed.
Manufactured homes and 55+ communities
Communities such as Bear Creek Village and Ridgeline at River Run have their own considerations. Equipment connected to a manufactured home's duct system needs to be suitable for manufactured-home use, and the outdoor unit placement may need park management approval. Many park rules also limit where pads and line sets can go. Bring us the community's rules at the estimate and we'll design around them.
Sizing for Arapahoe County winters
The ENERGY STAR reference puts Arapahoe County's heating design temperature at 4°F. We size to that with a Manual J and choose equipment by its 5°F output, then correct for altitude; NREL measured about 5–7% less capacity in Golden than at sea level. In a gas-heated home, keeping the furnace as backup (dual fuel) is often cheaper than adding electric strips and a panel upgrade.
Permits, utilities and incentives
The city's Building Department on South Federal Boulevard issues permits under the 2021 International Mechanical Code, and contractors must be licensed or registered with the city. We file the permit, including the electrical work for the new circuit, and schedule the inspection. A utility directory lists Xcel Energy as the gas and electric provider here, so Xcel's heat pump rebates should apply; installers report those changed on October 1, 2026, so confirm amounts with Xcel. Sheridan is a DRCOG member, so Power Ahead Colorado's $1,500 is available for existing homes when the contractor gets pre-approval before work begins. Colorado's tax credit is $1,000 in 2026, with at least $333 off your invoice. The federal 25C credit has ended. In a gas-heated home, gas is usually cheaper per unit of heat at current prices, so the payback rests mostly on replacing an aging AC.

Heat Pump Installation FAQs — Sheridan
I heat with baseboards. Is a heat pump worth it in Sheridan?
Usually, yes. A cold-climate heat pump delivers more heat per kilowatt-hour than resistance heat across the temperatures Sheridan sees, and you get air conditioning too.
Can a mobile home get a heat pump?
Yes, with equipment suitable for manufactured homes and park approval for the outdoor unit location.
Do I need a panel upgrade?
Not always. Removing baseboard circuits can free capacity. We check your panel before recommending one.
Who pulls the permit?
We do, through the city Building Department, and we schedule the inspection.
