Heat Pump Repair in Denver

Denver's heat pumps live in an unusual mix of buildings: ductless heads added to brick foursquares, ducted units in postwar ranches, and whole-home systems in newer neighborhoods like Central Park. Each setup fails in its own way. Here is what usually goes wrong in the city, and how we decide whether a repair makes sense.

Ice, roof drip and alley placement

A heat pump in heating mode pulls warmth out of cold air, so frost on the outdoor coil is normal. Every so often the unit flips into a short defrost cycle, the fan stops and a cloud of steam rolls off the coil. That is the system working. The problem is a solid block of ice that never clears.

On older city lots, the outdoor unit is often tucked under an eave or beside an alley garage, where meltwater drips off the roof and refreezes on top of the cabinet. No defrost cycle can keep up with that. Before we replace a sensor or control board, we look up: a short gutter extension or moving the unit a few feet can end the problem for good. When the coil ices with no roof drip involved, the usual suspects are a failed defrost sensor, a weak outdoor fan motor or low refrigerant.

Denver Climate Note

Mile High elevation (5,280 ft) means HVAC equipment derates and combustion needs altitude tuning. Dry winter air drops indoor RH below 15% — humidifiers strongly recommended.

Blowing cold air in heat mode

If vents blow cool air on a winter morning and the outdoor unit is running, the reversing valve is a prime suspect. That valve redirects refrigerant to switch between heating and cooling. Sometimes only the electric solenoid coil on the valve has failed, which is a small part. When the valve body itself sticks, the repair means recovering the refrigerant, brazing in a new valve, pulling a vacuum and recharging. On a unit that is already 12 or more years old, that bill is often the point where we show you replacement numbers side by side.

Aux heat and the electric bill

Many city homes with a heat pump have electric backup strips in the air handler. They are meant to help on the coldest nights and during defrost. When they run all day, the bill shows it. Common causes are a thermostat stuck on emergency heat, a thermostat set up for a different system type, a failed outdoor sensor, or a heat pump that has quietly stopped producing heat so the strips carry the whole load.

On homes with 100-amp service, which many older Denver houses still have, strips that cycle constantly can also trip breakers. We check amperage on each strip, confirm the outdoor unit is actually contributing, and set an outdoor lockout so the strips only help when they should. If you have a gas furnace paired with the heat pump, the changeover temperature matters just as much. Our dual fuel guide explains how that setting affects cost.

Ductless heads in foursquares and bungalows

Ductless heads upstairs in a Denver Square are a common fix for hot, cold second floors. Their failures are different from ducted systems. A head that drips water down the wall usually has a clogged or sagging condensate line. A musty smell points to a dirty blower wheel, not just a dirty filter. A blinking light is an error code that tells us whether the fault is in the head, the outdoor unit or the communication wire between them. We clean blower wheels in place and read codes with the manufacturer's charts.

Repair or replace, and paperwork

Heat pumps in this city range from brand new to 20 years old, so there is no single answer. We weigh the unit's age, the refrigerant it uses, how many major parts have already failed, and what a replacement would qualify for. Existing R-410A systems can still be serviced, but new equipment now uses lower-GWP refrigerants. If replacement wins, a cold-climate model can bring a $1,500 Power Ahead Colorado rebate (we file before work starts) plus the state credit, which knocks at least $333 off the bill. The federal 25C credit ended after 2025. We pull the CPD mechanical permit and schedule the inspection.

Heat Pump Repair FAQs — Denver

Is steam coming off my outdoor unit a problem?

Usually not. A short burst of steam with the fan stopped is a normal defrost cycle. Call if the coil stays encased in ice or the unit never seems to defrost.

My heat pump was installed two years ago. Is it still under warranty?

Probably for parts, if it was registered. Some manufacturers require registration within a set window; Trane, for example, gives longer coverage when units are registered within 60 days. Labor is usually not included.

Why is my January electric bill so high with a heat pump?

Backup heat strips doing work the heat pump should be doing is the most common reason in Denver. A thermostat setting, sensor or refrigerant problem can cause it.

Do you need a permit to repair a heat pump in Denver?

Most repairs don't. Replacing the system does, and we pull that permit through Community Planning and Development.
