Seasonal HVAC Tune-Ups in Boulder
Boulder homes range from Mapleton Hill houses built before 1910 to mid-century ranches in Martin Acres and newer homes in Gunbarrel, and a growing number now heat with heat pumps. Boulder's downslope windstorms, summer wildfire smoke, and very dry winter air all show up in what a seasonal tune-up needs to cover.
Smoke season and filters
During wildfire smoke events, EPA recommends a MERV 13 filter in a central system, running the fan more, and closing any outdoor-air intake. Not every Boulder duct system can handle a MERV 13 filter, especially retrofitted ductwork in older houses with small returns. During the spring tune-up we measure static pressure with your current filter, then tell you whether a higher-efficiency filter will work or whether you would be better served with a deeper media cabinet or a portable air cleaner.
After a smoky summer, filters and indoor coils load up fast. The fall visit includes checking the filter and the coil face for the soot and ash that settle in during smoke events.

Boulder Climate Note
At 5,319 ft and against the foothills, Boulder runs ~3-5°F colder in winter than Denver and gets intense solar gain on south-facing slopes. Heat pumps perform exceptionally well here.

Wind and venting
Winter gusts above 100 mph are part of local weather history, and they find every weak spot in a vent system. On the fall visit we check that furnace and water heater vent caps, sidewall terminations, and plastic intake and exhaust pipes are secure and unobstructed, and that the outdoor unit is still level and anchored. A loose termination can let exhaust re-enter the house, so we pair this with a carbon monoxide test indoors.
Heat pump tune-ups are year-round systems
A heat pump runs both seasons, so its tune-up is less about one season and more about the whole year. We check the reversing valve, defrost control and sensors, refrigerant charge, outdoor coil, and auxiliary heat strips, and confirm the thermostat is not calling for backup heat too early. For background on cold-weather performance, see do heat pumps work in Denver winters.
Dry air and humidifiers
With January lows averaging around 21 degrees and very low indoor humidity, many older Boulder homes have whole-house humidifiers on the furnace. In the fall we replace or clean the water panel if you have one on hand, check the solenoid and drain, and make sure the unit is not dripping onto the furnace cabinet or coil. A neglected humidifier is a common cause of rust inside furnaces.
Registration and records for newer equipment
Homeowners who have recently switched to a heat pump, or rebuilt after a fire, often have equipment less than two years old. Manufacturer coverage on many brands depends on registration within 60 days of installation; Trane, for example, drops to a shorter base warranty if the equipment is not registered in that window. During the first tune-up we write down model and serial numbers, check that the installation matches the manufacturer's clearance and drainage requirements, and give you a record you can file with the registration. If something was installed incorrectly, it is better to find it while the installer can still fix it.
When to schedule
Pricing is written upfront before any work, and if we find a part that needs replacing, you get the cost before we do it.
Plan the heating tune-up for September, ahead of the early-October freeze typical of the Denver area, and the cooling or heat pump check for April or May, before smoke season and the first hot spell. Our Colorado tune-up checklist explains each item.

Seasonal HVAC Tune-Ups FAQs — Boulder
Should I use a MERV 13 filter in my Boulder house during smoke season?
If your return ducts can handle it, yes, as EPA recommends. We measure static pressure first, because a restrictive filter on a small return can starve a furnace or heat pump of airflow.
My heat pump is still under warranty. Does a tune-up matter?
Manufacturer warranties typically cover failed parts, not the labor or damage from neglect such as a never-changed filter. Keep tune-up invoices with your registration confirmation.
Do you service Mapleton Hill homes with old chimneys?
Yes. We check how the furnace vents into the chimney or liner, test draft, and test for carbon monoxide. If the chimney itself needs work, we will say so.
How often should a whole-house humidifier be serviced?
At least once a year, at the start of heating season, with the water panel replaced as the manufacturer recommends.
