Ductless Mini-Split Installation in Boulder
Boulder has some of the oldest housing on the Front Range, plenty of homes heated by boilers and radiators, and a city energy code that pushes toward electric heat. That combination makes ductless mini-splits a common request here. Wind and a 0°F design temperature shape how we install them.
Radiator houses in Mapleton Hill
Most of Mapleton Hill's roughly 500 homes were built before 1910, and many still heat with hot-water radiators. Owners usually like the radiant heat but want summer cooling. Cutting ducts into plaster walls is destructive, so ductless heads are the common answer: one per main room, or a ceiling cassette where a wall head would look out of place.
Mapleton Hill is a historic district, so ask the city's historic preservation staff early whether a condenser or line set visible from the street needs review. Placing the outdoor unit at the rear or side and painting line covers to match usually keeps it simple. Our guide for older homes covers layouts.

Boulder Climate Note
At 5,319 ft and against the foothills, Boulder runs ~3-5°F colder in winter than Denver and gets intense solar gain on south-facing slopes. Heat pumps perform exceptionally well here.

Ranches in Martin Acres and newer homes in Table Mesa
Martin Acres' 1950s ranches are compact, and a two- or three-head system can heat and cool the whole house, letting owners retire an aging furnace. Table Mesa and Gunbarrel homes are bigger; there a mini-split more often serves a finished basement, an addition, or an upstairs bedroom the main system never quite reaches.
Mounting for Boulder's wind
Downslope windstorms off the foothills have produced gusts above 100 mph, including 112 mph during the Marshall Fire. We use stands and wall brackets rated for the unit's weight, anchor them properly and keep them out of corners where snow piles up. A condenser sitting on the ground in a drift zone loses capacity right when you need it.
Cold climate, condensate and electrical
Boulder County's heating design temperature is 0°F. If the mini-split is meant to be your main heat, we size the heads from a room-by-room load and choose models with published output at 5°F and below. Indoor condensate runs to an interior drain or pump so it can't freeze outside.
A condenser in Boulder gets its own 240-volt breaker and a lockable disconnect beside it. In older homes we check panel capacity first, especially if you also plan an EV charger or induction range. The City of Boulder issues mechanical permits under its 2024 energy code, and we pull them and schedule the inspection.
Rebates for Boulder installs
Xcel Energy serves Boulder for gas and electricity, and its heat pump rebates changed October 1, 2026, so confirm current amounts with Xcel. Boulder is in DRCOG, so Power Ahead Colorado's $1,500 rebate applies to cold-climate heat pumps in existing homes when we submit before work starts. Colorado's $1,000 state credit also applies this year, and at least $333 of it shows up as a line-item discount. Boulder County's EnergySmart rebates are now limited to households at or below 100% of area median income. The federal 25C credit is no longer available.
Single-zone, multi-zone and ducted mini-splits
Not every ductless project needs wall heads. A compact ducted air handler tucked into an attic knee wall or closet can serve two or three small upstairs bedrooms through short duct runs, which keeps the rooms looking original. Wall heads remain the most efficient and least invasive choice for open rooms and additions.
For whole-house conversions we often pair one multi-zone outdoor unit with a mix of wall heads and a ducted unit, sized from a room-by-room load. Oversizing is a real problem in mild Boulder weather: an oversized head cycles on and off and does a poor job of dehumidifying.

Ductless Mini-Split Installation FAQs — Boulder
Can a mini-split be hidden in a historic room?
Partly. Ceiling cassettes, floor consoles and small ducted units are all less visible than a wall head.
Can I keep my radiators and add a mini-split for cooling?
Yes. Many Mapleton Hill owners do exactly that, and the heads also give efficient heat on mild days.
Do I need historic review for the outdoor unit?
Ask the city's historic preservation staff before installing in a landmark district. Rear or side placement usually keeps it simple.
Can ductless replace my furnace in a Martin Acres ranch?
Often, if the house is reasonably tight and the system is sized to Boulder County's 0°F design temperature.
Who issues the permit?
The City of Boulder Planning & Development Services issues the mechanical permit. We pull it.
