Heat Pump Repair in Boulder
Boulder has more heat pumps per block than most of the metro, thanks to its energy code and years of city and county electrification programs. That also means more of them are aging into their first major repairs, and the downslope windstorms that come off the Flatirons give outdoor units a harder life than they get in Denver.
What a Boulder windstorm does to an outdoor unit
Winter downslope winds here have gusted above 100 mph, and the Marshall Fire day saw 112 mph. Strong wind can flip a lightweight unit off a pad, bend the fan guard into the blade, and pack fine dirt and needles into the coil. It also robs heat from the coil faster, so the unit frosts and defrosts more often in a blow.
After a big wind event, look for a unit that has shifted, a fan that scrapes or a top grille that is dented. We check mounting, refasten or replace brackets, and recommend wind-rated stands or wall brackets on exposed sites in Table Mesa and along the foothills.
Gunbarrel and the open areas east of town see a different wind problem: blowing snow that packs into the coil from the side and refreezes. Moving the condenser behind the house, out of the prevailing gusts, or adding a small baffle means fewer defrosts and no iced fan. We would rather fix the siting once than come back every January for the same frozen coil.

Boulder Climate Note
At 5,319 ft and against the foothills, Boulder runs ~3-5°F colder in winter than Denver and gets intense solar gain on south-facing slopes. Heat pumps perform exceptionally well here.

Ductless heads in Mapleton Hill and older homes
In Mapleton Hill, where most homes predate 1910, ductless systems are often the only practical way owners added efficient heat and cooling. Typical service calls are dirty blower wheels that cut airflow and grow mildew, condensate pumps that fail and drip down plaster walls, and communication errors between the outdoor unit and the heads. We clean wheels and coils in place, replace pumps and trace wiring faults by code.
If a head blows cool in heating mode on a cold night, low charge from a leaking flare is a likely suspect. See our ductless guide for how these systems are laid out.
Cold-weather performance and the aux question
Boulder's design temperature is 0°F, and a good cold-climate heat pump still delivers heat well below that. If yours hands off to resistance strips or a furnace at 30°F, the cause may be a thermostat lockout set far too high, not a weak unit. On dual-fuel systems in Martin Acres ranches, we often find the switchover point left at a factory default. We set it from your Xcel gas and electric rates. Our winter performance article explains what to expect.
Hail and the coil
Summer hail flattens coil fins and can dent the tubing behind them. Light damage combs out. Heavy damage cuts capacity permanently, and we document it with photos for an insurance claim.
Repair or replace under Boulder's code
A unit under ten years old with a failed capacitor, fan motor, defrost board or sensor is a clear repair. A system from the early 2010s with a failed compressor, a leaking indoor coil or R-22 refrigerant is usually a replacement, and that work needs a City of Boulder mechanical permit under the 2024 energy code, which we pull.
Replacement incentives include Colorado's $1,000 credit, Power Ahead Colorado's $1,500 rebate and Xcel rebates, which changed in October 2026 and should be confirmed. Boulder County's EnergySmart help is now income-qualified only. The federal 25C credit has ended.

Heat Pump Repair FAQs — Boulder
Should I turn my heat pump off during a windstorm?
No, but check it afterward for shifting, fan noise or a dented grille, and call us if anything looks wrong.
Why does my mini-split leak water on the wall?
Usually a clogged drain or failed condensate pump. Shut the head off and call before plaster gets wet.
My heat pump switches to the furnace at 35°F. Is that right?
Usually not. Most cold-climate units should carry the load much lower. We reset the switchover.
Can hail-damaged fins be repaired?
Light bending can be combed straight. Crushed coils usually need replacement, and we document damage for insurance.
Does Boulder require a permit for heat pump repairs?
Repairs generally do not; replacements need a city mechanical permit, which we pull.
