Heat Pump Installation in Castle Rock
Castle Rock is colder and higher than Denver: about 6,220 feet, with an 18°F average January low and a record of 37 below zero. Most homes here are served by Black Hills Energy for gas and CORE Electric Cooperative for electricity, so heat pump decisions in Castle Rock follow a different playbook than in Xcel territory.
What a cold-climate heat pump has to do here
A heat pump is rated at 47°F, but Castle Rock's winters are spent mostly between the teens and 40s, with a few nights far below that. We size for the Douglas County design temperature of about 4°F and look for equipment that publishes strong capacity at 5°F. ENERGY STAR's cold-climate criteria require at least 70% of rated capacity and a COP of 1.75 or better at 5°F. Then we correct for altitude, which matters more at 6,200 feet than in the lower metro.
The 37-below record is the reason we always plan backup heat. In most Castle Rock homes the most practical backup is the gas furnace already in the basement, set up as a dual-fuel system.

Castle Rock Climate Note
Castle Rock sits at 6,224 ft — one of the higher Front Range cities. Significant equipment derate and stronger winter winds than Denver metro. Sealed-combustion + properly sized equipment essential.

From Craig and Gould to Terrain
Homes in the Craig and Gould historic district date from the late 1800s to the mid-1900s. Many have additions, small ducts or rooms the original system never reached. A ductless mini-split, or a slim ducted unit serving a few rooms, avoids cutting into old walls. See our guide to mini-splits in older homes.
Founders Village homes are mostly 1990s split-levels and two-stories (median year built 1997). Their original ACs and furnaces are at or past typical lifespans, which makes them prime candidates for a heat pump with a new or existing furnace as dual-fuel backup. The Meadows covers a wide range of build years. Newer homes in Terrain often have sealed ducts and higher-capacity panels, which makes an all-electric cold-climate system more realistic.
Incentives with Black Hills and CORE
Xcel's heat pump rebates don't apply to Black Hills gas or CORE electric customers. CORE's energy-efficiency page listed no heat pump rebate when we checked in November 2026, so call CORE Member Services at (800) 332-9540. Black Hills Energy's 2026 Colorado gas program has no electric heat pump rebate. If a dual-fuel project includes a new furnace, it pays $350 for 95% AFUE or $375 for 97% AFUE, plus envelope rebates such as air sealing. Equipment must be installed in 2026, and applications are due January 31, 2027.
The Town of Castle Rock is a DRCOG member, so Power Ahead Colorado's $1,500 rebate applies to cold-climate air-source heat pumps in existing homes, with contractor pre-approval before work starts. The Colorado heat pump tax credit adds at least $333 off your invoice in 2026. The federal 25C credit is gone for 2026 installs.
Running cost reality
Gas heat from a modern furnace is usually cheaper per unit than heat pump heat at current Colorado prices, and that's especially true with backup strips running on cold nights. That's why dual fuel is the default recommendation here unless the furnace is failing and you want to go all-electric. The heat pump still replaces your AC, handles fall and spring heating, and reduces gas use. For a switchover setting based on your Black Hills and CORE rates, see our dual-fuel guide.
Permitting in town and county
The Town of Castle Rock's Building Division accepts mechanical permits through eTRAKiT. Addresses outside town limits go to Douglas County's Building Division. We confirm jurisdiction, file the permit, handle any electrical permitting for new circuits or a panel upgrade, and schedule the inspection.
Every estimate is free and comes with an upfront written price. It lists the AHRI-matched equipment, its published capacity at 5°F, the altitude correction we used, the backup-heat plan and any electrical or duct work. That makes it easy to compare against other bids. Financing is available if you'd rather spread out the cost.

Heat Pump Installation FAQs — Castle Rock
Will a heat pump keep up at 20 below?
Not by itself in most homes. That's what backup heat is for. With dual fuel, the furnace takes over automatically on the coldest nights.
Are there utility heat pump rebates in Castle Rock?
Black Hills' 2026 gas program has none for electric heat pumps, and CORE listed none on its efficiency page in November 2026. Check with CORE directly. Power Ahead's $1,500 and the state credit still apply.
Is my Founders Village home a good fit?
Usually, as dual fuel. A heat pump replaces the aging AC, and the furnace covers the coldest hours.
Does Castle Rock require a permit?
Yes. The town issues mechanical permits through eTRAKiT. Addresses outside town limits use Douglas County.
