Heat Pump Installation in Greenwood Village
Greenwood Village homes tend to be large, often on half-acre to one-acre lots, and many have two or three HVAC systems. That changes the heat pump question. Instead of one big decision, it's usually a series of smaller ones, made system by system as equipment ages. Here's how we approach those decisions, along with what's worth knowing about rebates, sizing and permits.
Converting one system at a time
In a house with separate systems for the main floor, upstairs and basement, the AC units rarely fail at the same time. When the first one goes, replacing it with a heat pump and keeping that zone's furnace as dual-fuel backup gives you a working comparison inside your own house. In Greenwood Village, many owners convert the upstairs zone first, because it carries most of the cooling load and benefits from the heat pump's long, even cycles.
Basement zones have small heating loads and are often oversized. A properly sized mini-split, or a smaller ducted heat pump, can serve them more efficiently than a large furnace.

Greenwood Village Climate Note
Greenwood Village at 5,633 ft has typical south-metro climate. Larger homes often benefit from zoning to address sun-exposure imbalances and multi-floor temperature differences.

Greenwood Hills ranches and newer custom homes
Greenwood Hills has 1960s ranches on lots close to an acre. These long single-story plans often have long duct runs and additions built over several decades. We measure static pressure and room airflow before recommending a ducted heat pump, because long runs that worked with hot furnace air can leave the far rooms cool when supply air is cooler.
Sundance Hills, Old Greenwood and The Preserve have newer, larger custom homes. About 38% of the city's housing was built in 2000 or later. Those homes usually have the duct sizes, zoning and electrical service to support all-electric cold-climate systems with variable-speed compressors.
Capacity, altitude and placement
At about 5,630 feet, we size each zone from a room-by-room Manual J at the Arapahoe County design temperature of about 4°F and correct for altitude. In big homes, oversizing is the most common mistake, often because a new heat pump gets matched to the tonnage of the old unit. An oversized heat pump short-cycles, dehumidifies poorly in summer and costs more upfront. Our sizing guide explains how to check a contractor's math.
On large lots, outdoor units can go farther from bedrooms and patios. Long line sets need correct refrigerant charge adjustments, and we document those.
For larger Greenwood Village homes, we also look at the panel. Several heat pumps with backup strips can add up to a big electrical load. Dual fuel avoids most of it, and an all-electric plan may need a service upgrade that should be priced from the start.
Incentives and running costs
Xcel Energy provides gas and electricity in Greenwood Village, so Xcel rebates apply to each qualifying system. Installers report the cold-climate rebate for gas customers dropped to about $1,500 per heating ton on October 1, 2026, so confirm the current amount with Xcel. The city is a DRCOG member, so Power Ahead Colorado's $1,500 applies with contractor pre-approval. The state credit gives at least $333 off the invoice. The federal 25C credit is gone.
At current prices, gas heat from a 95% furnace is usually cheaper per unit than heat pump heat, and in large homes that difference adds up. Dual fuel lets the heat pump work during mild weather and leaves the coldest hours to gas. See our dual-fuel guide for switchover settings.
Permits
Greenwood Village's Community Development department handles building permits and inspections. Whether a specific HVAC replacement needs a permit is something we confirm with the city for each job. When one is needed, we file it, coordinate electrical permits for new circuits and schedule the inspection.

Heat Pump Installation FAQs — Greenwood Village
Do I have to convert every system at once?
No. Many owners convert one zone at a time as each AC reaches the end of its life.
Will a heat pump heat the far end of a long ranch?
It can, if the ducts can move enough air. We measure airflow and static pressure first and fix weak runs.
Can each system get its own Xcel rebate?
Xcel's rebate is based on qualifying equipment and capacity. Confirm per-system eligibility and current amounts with Xcel before you sign.
Is my basement zone oversized?
Often. A Manual J shows its real load, and a smaller heat pump or mini-split usually fits better.
