Heat Pump Installation in Columbine

Columbine grew fast in the 1960s, when the Martin Company's missile plant in Waterton Canyon brought thousands of workers south, and kept building through the 1990s. That left a neighborhood full of split-levels, bi-levels and brick ranches, and those floor plans decide how a heat pump should be laid out.

Split-levels and bi-levels need balanced airflow

A split-level has three or four half-floors fed by one furnace, and the upper bedrooms usually sit farthest from it. In cooling season, those rooms run hot; in heating season, the lower level runs cold. A heat pump makes airflow even more important, because it heats with warm rather than hot air and runs longer cycles. We measure static pressure, check return sizing on each level and balance dampers as part of the install. NREL's Golden tests found high static pressure cut heat pump capacity and efficiency, so skipping this step costs you.

Bi-levels are simpler, with the furnace in the lower level and short runs upstairs. They usually take a ducted cold-climate heat pump without major duct changes.

Some owners add a ductless head in a finished lower level or a converted garage instead of extending ducts. It gives that space its own thermostat, which is often what fixes the comfort complaint in the first place.

Columbine Climate Note

At about 5,542 feet, furnaces need altitude setup and AC capacity drops slightly in thinner air. Front Range summer hail regularly damages condenser coils.

1960s homes: check the panel first

Homes in Columbine Knolls, where the median year built is 1970, and the older parts of Columbine West and Columbine Hills sometimes still have 100-amp service. A heat pump outdoor unit needs a dedicated 240-volt circuit, and electric backup strips can add another 40 amps or more. If the panel is full, keeping your gas furnace as backup (dual fuel) usually makes more sense than an upgrade. If you want to go all-electric, HomeGuide's national range for a 100-to-200-amp upgrade is $1,300–$1,600, done by an electrician under a separate permit.

Sizing for this part of the metro

The area sits at about 5,542 feet. Jefferson County's ENERGY STAR design temperature is 5°F, and we size to that with a room-by-room Manual J. Equipment is chosen by its published output at 5°F, reduced for altitude; NREL measured about 5–7% less capacity at 5,860 feet than at sea level. Many 1960s and 1970s homes have had new windows and attic insulation since they were built, which lowers the load. That's why we calculate rather than match the old furnace size. Our sizing guide explains more.

Permits

Columbine is an unincorporated area, mostly in Jefferson County, with a small piece in Arapahoe County. Jefferson County Building Safety issues the mechanical permit for most addresses, with a separate electrical permit for the outdoor unit. Addresses in the Arapahoe portion go through Arapahoe County. We confirm which applies and pull the permits.

Incentives and honest running costs

A utility directory lists Xcel Energy as the electric provider, so Xcel's heat pump rebates should apply. Installers report those changed on October 1, 2026; confirm current amounts with Xcel. Both Jefferson and Arapahoe counties are DRCOG members, so Power Ahead Colorado's $1,500 applies to cold-climate air-source heat pumps in existing homes, with contractor pre-approval before work starts. The Colorado credit is $1,000 in 2026, with at least $333 off the invoice. The federal 25C credit has ended. At current prices, a 95% furnace typically costs less to run per unit of heat, so the best payback usually comes from replacing an aging AC with a heat pump and keeping the furnace. Heat Pump Installation FAQs — Columbine

Will a heat pump work in my split-level?

Yes, if the airflow to each level is right. We check returns and static pressure and balance the system during installation.

Should the heat pump replace my furnace or work alongside it?

If the furnace is under about 15 years old and working well, pairing it with a heat pump (dual fuel) is usually the better value. If it's failing, an all-electric air handler with backup strips is an option, depending on your panel.

Do I need to upgrade my 100-amp panel?

Not for a dual-fuel setup in most cases. All-electric designs with backup strips more often need an upgrade.

Who issues the permit for my address?

Jefferson County Building Safety for most of the area, or Arapahoe County for the small Arapahoe portion.

Is Power Ahead available here?

Yes. Both counties covering the area are DRCOG members. The contractor must get pre-approval before work begins.
