AC Installation & Replacement in Castle Rock
Castle Rock has grown from a small county seat into a town of more than 73,000, and its houses span that whole history: late-1800s homes in the Craig and Gould district, 1990s two-stories in Founders Village, and new construction in Terrain. At about 6,200 feet, the town is also high enough that altitude belongs in every load calculation. We install central air and heat pumps here with a Manual J, the town permit, and written pricing.
Historic homes near downtown
Many houses in the Craig and Gould neighborhood were built long before forced air, and some still heat with a boiler or a small floor furnace. Without usable ductwork, a ducted central AC means building a duct system in the attic or basement, which is a large project in a small house. A ductless heat pump with one or two indoor heads often cools these homes more evenly at lower cost, and it heats as well. See our mini-split guide for older homes.
Where a forced-air furnace already exists, adding a coil is straightforward, but we still check the electrical service. Older homes frequently need panel work before a 240-volt condenser circuit can be added.

Founders Village and The Meadows: replacing 1990s systems
Founders Village has a median build year of 1997, and The Meadows began filling in during the same decade. Original condensers from that period run on R-22, which is no longer produced. A replacement today means a matched outdoor unit and indoor coil using R-454B or R-32, a pressure-tested or new line set, and an updated thermostat.
This is also when to correct the original sizing. Builders often installed one large condenser for a two-story house with a single return upstairs. A Manual J paired with a static-pressure test usually shows whether better return air or zoning would do more than added tonnage.
Hail, sun, and condenser placement
Castle Rock sits in Hail Alley, and at over 6,000 feet more hail reaches the ground before melting. Thinner air also leaves condensers with less margin, so placement matters: full clearance on all sides, away from roof valleys and downspouts that dump ice and hail, and not boxed in by decorative screening. HOAs in The Meadows and Terrain have design guidelines for equipment location and screening, so confirm before the pad moves.
New homes in Terrain usually do not need new equipment yet, but some owners add a second system or a ductless unit for a finished basement or bonus room. We size those additions on their own load, not as a rule of thumb.
Permits, CORE Electric, and heat pumps
Inside town limits, we apply through the Town of Castle Rock Building Division's eTRAKiT portal; addresses outside the town go to Douglas County. CORE Electric Cooperative supplies electricity across most of town, so Xcel's electric rebates generally do not apply. Gas comes from Black Hills Energy.
A heat pump is worth pricing next to a straight AC. Colorado's 2026 air-source credit is $1,000, claimed by the contractor with at least $333 passed to you on the invoice, and Power Ahead Colorado pays $1,500 for cold-climate models if we apply before work begins. The federal 25C credit ended with 2025. Our heat pump vs. furnace guide compares operating costs.

Air Conditioning Installation FAQs — Castle Rock
Can a historic Castle Rock home get central air without ductwork?
Yes, with a ductless or small-duct heat pump. It avoids running new ducts through finished walls and also provides heat.
Who handles the permit?
We do. Inside town limits it goes through the Town of Castle Rock Building Division's eTRAKiT portal; outside town limits, Douglas County Building Division.
What efficiency will a new system be?
At least 13.4 SEER2 for a split AC and 14.3 SEER2 for a split heat pump under DOE's North region standard. We quote higher tiers too.
Does CORE Electric offer AC rebates?
CORE's programs differ from Xcel's and change over time, so check with CORE before buying. Its Cool Credits program supports compatible smart thermostats.
Should I replace my furnace at the same time?
If it is 15 to 20 years old, it is worth pricing together, since the new coil sits on the furnace. New gas furnaces sold in Colorado since January 2026 must meet the state's low-NOx limit, and Black Hills Energy's 2026 program has rebates on furnaces of 90 percent AFUE or higher, with applications due January 31, 2027.
