Ductless Mini-Split Installation in Castle Rock
Castle Rock's oldest homes, in the Craig and Gould district, date from the late 1800s to the mid-1900s, long before central air. The rest of town is mostly 1990s and newer master-planned housing. Ductless mini-splits fit both, for different reasons, and the town's utilities affect the rebates.
Craig and Gould historic homes
Homes in the Craig and Gould neighborhood were built from the late 1800s to the mid-1900s. Many have plaster walls, small attics and additions from several decades. Ducts were often added later and skip upstairs rooms or porches. Ductless heads add cooling and efficient heat without opening walls, and a multi-zone system can take over most of the heating in a smaller house.
Place the condenser at the side or rear and keep line sets off the street-facing facade. Our guide to mini-splits in older homes covers layouts.

Castle Rock Climate Note
Castle Rock sits at 6,224 ft — one of the higher Front Range cities. Significant equipment derate and stronger winter winds than Denver metro. Sealed-combustion + properly sized equipment essential.

Picking heads for older rooms
In historic houses, wall space is often taken by tall windows, original trim and built-ins. Floor consoles fit under windows, ceiling cassettes work where there's attic space above, and a small ducted air handler can serve two upstairs bedrooms from a closet. Each indoor unit is sized to its room, since an oversized one cycles on and off and leaves summer air damp.
We avoid drilling through original exterior details and route line sets through framing wherever possible, finishing exterior runs in covers painted to match.
Founders Village split-levels and two-stories
Founders Village has a median build year of 1997, with split-levels and two-stories. The typical complaints are a cool lower level and a warm upper floor. A single head on the problem level gives it its own thermostat, and the furnace and AC keep serving the rest of the house.
The Meadows and Terrain
The Meadows is one of the large master-planned communities, and Terrain has newer construction. These homes are ducted, so mini-splits typically serve bonus rooms, finished basements or home offices. Both communities have design guidelines, so get HOA approval for the outdoor unit location first. If your Terrain home is still under construction, Power Ahead Colorado won't apply until it's complete.
Altitude and cold-climate sizing
Castle Rock sits around 6,224 feet, and Douglas County's heating design temperature is 4°F. We use the manufacturer's altitude data rather than nameplate capacity, size each head from a room-by-room load, and choose cold-climate models with published output at 5°F.
Freeze protection and line-set routing
Outdoor units go on stands above drifting snow, away from roof edges. Inside, head condensate is piped to a household drain or lifted by a mini pump. In older homes we route line sets through closets or the attic where possible to keep exterior runs short and tidy.
Permits and wiring
The Town of Castle Rock Building Division handles permits through its eTRAKiT portal; addresses outside town limits go to Douglas County. We file and schedule the inspection. Electrical work means a dedicated 240-volt circuit plus a disconnect beside the condenser. Older Craig and Gould homes may have small panels, so we check before quoting a multi-zone system.
Utilities and incentives
Black Hills Energy supplies gas and CORE Electric supplies power, so Xcel rebates don't apply. Black Hills' 2026 Colorado rebate form has no heat pump measure, and CORE lists no heat pump rebate on its efficiency page.
The town is a DRCOG member, so Power Ahead Colorado's $1,500 rebate can apply to cold-climate systems in existing homes when we submit before installation. The state's 2026 credit is $1,000 per qualifying system, with at least $333 discounted on the invoice. The federal 25C credit ended after 2025.

Ductless Mini-Split Installation FAQs — Castle Rock
Can a mini-split work in a Craig and Gould historic home?
Yes. Ductless heads avoid opening plaster walls, and we keep outdoor equipment off the street-facing side.
Do Xcel rebates apply in Castle Rock?
No. Black Hills supplies gas and CORE supplies electricity.
Who issues the permit?
The Town of Castle Rock Building Division, or Douglas County outside town limits.
Will a mini-split fix my cool lower level?
Usually. A head on that level gives it independent control.
Does Power Ahead apply to a new Terrain home?
Not during construction. Completed homes may qualify.
Can the indoor unit be less visible in a historic room?
Yes. Floor consoles, ceiling cassettes and small ducted units are all options.
